I have an IPAQ 4155, I would like to get a GPS receiver and some good mapping software for driving in Ireland.

Whats the best/ cheapest way of doing this?

    Thanks

You can get the GPS anywere cheap enopugh but softwar eis a pain in the arese. Shop around ALOT for that if i were you. Map coverage of Ireland tends to be grand for the cities and terrible else where. MS AutoRoute/MapPoint has only justy got the raod from waterford to dublin in it. I fell off the map going to west cork a while back.

if you are using GPS in ireland, copilot 5 generally has the best coverage ATM.

Mapopolis is not bad, you can get a free 9day trial also. Its not as clean as Copilot or Navigon, but is less resource intensive.

So far the best two device seem to be Tomtom Navigator 5 (launched tomorrow - though I can't find anything on maps in Ireland) and Co Pilot 5 (http://www.expansys.ie/product.asp?code=114453) - the best price in this one is €320 from expansys - anywhere I can get this cheaper?

320 isn't so bad considering u get the Bluetooth GPS with it. I have the same GPS unit and it works extreamly well.

Destinator 3 has decent maps of Dublin and nice software.

The reason there isn't really good coverage of Ireland for GPS maps is because those scumbags in the Ordinance Survey charge through the nose for access to their data. Compare this to the US Geological Survey who give it out for free to everyone.

Any software iv seen has detailed coverage of Dublin, its the rest of the country that you have to check out.

I agree about the OS guys. They are grand if you want a map for non profit once off use (orienteering or somthing) but they hold on to the vector maps pretty tightly.
