Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia

I am going interrailing in July/August for a few weeks. We'll be starting in Italy and finishing in Dubrovnik, with Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria in between. I was initially planning to visit Skopje, Belgrade and Sarajevo but, due to time constraints and poor connections will only be able to go 1 or 2 of these areas. Can anyone recommend any areas in particular that are worth seeing?

If you are finishing in Dubrovnik, take in Mostar which is in Bosnia, about a 2 hour drive (3 hour by bus) from Dubrovnik.

Plitivice lakes, not far from Zagreb are a must see place as well, I don't know if you have time to do some Croatian Island Hopping, if you do, then You could do Split, Hvar, Brac, Korcula, Mljet, Dubrovnik loop by ferry which would be very nice indeed.

Be careful about Skopje, we all have romantic notions of visiting places where 'no man has gone before', but it's no fun if you are unsafe and feel under threat and eyed with suspicion, some places are unsafe for another few years until they find their economic feet, and their citizens can start earning some money.

I'd steer clear of Macedonia and Albania, for a few years yet.

Why not try Montenegro instead?

Considering that both of us are female, we might play it safe and stick to Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro
