Sounds like you have the nozzle inserted into the tank at a weird angle, which causes it to airlock and click-click-click. I hate those newer pumps with the retractable hoses, they seem to be the worst for this.

I find that women never leave the petrol pump rest in the hole..they hold it up kinda in place and this leads to the click click clickkk

This brings up a question - how does the pump know when to stop? Airlock? So how does this work?

Right, I thought it was just my car, until it happened again the other day with gf's micra. Eventually I figured out that if you push the nozzle all the way in, then pull it out a little bit, all will be well :)

i believe their is a sensor in the nozzle/handle unit and cuts the pump power when the pump is not inserted correctly

Nope, A sensor in the nozzle detects splash back when the tank is full and cuts the pump.

yup, which works on the same principle as the air lock issue ... you put something into a sealed area, air must be allowed escape :)
