First Mac question...

Firstly, thank you to Thumper Long for the fine laptop.

This is an important question for me: How can I fine tune the mouse sensetivity threshold?

The mouse options panel only seems to cover mouse speed in general, but not threshold sensetivity. As a result, I have to move my mouse quite some distance before the pointer moves, which then jumps all over. Its not acceptable to me, as I get wrist cramps easily with such settings. Is there a third-party utility or config file that will let me tune it ("xset m 3 5" doesn't really work)?

Also, what are good Mac boards to hit upon? :)

Next up: Firefox. Tabbed browsing. The setup seems a mess compared to the Linux and Windows versions...

I can't middle click a link to launch a link (or bookmark) in a new tab, I can't click on a tab to close it, etc. Heh. I've looked into most of the tab plugins for Firefox, but nothing that really covers this on its own.

    Anyone here have suggestions?

    apple + t = new tab
    apple + w = close tab
    apple + q = close app
ctrl + click = open link in new tab

Using a mouse, get usb overdrive to enable all the buttons, what model do you have ?

    Have a look at camino - http://www.caminobrowser.org/

I find it superior to Firefox

Agreed, there's the keyboard shortcuts. However, I've the laptop currently up on a desk and set back somewhat, so reaching up to hit keyboard shortcuts is awkward at best.

Oops, if that was sarcasm then this is a link.

As for tabbed browsing without keyboard or right click - have you tried keeping your button clicked on the link for a second? This should give a dropdown menu for opening in a new tab.

Hehe, sorry, I wasn't being sarcastic. USB Overdrive fixed my mouse problem-a twitch will send it flying accross the screen, which is how I need it.

I had a look at the board. Lots of info, some whining, I've survived (and percipitated) worse. :D

    Fenster,

I'm a huge Safari fan so even though I like Firefox, I'm still shocked you don't browse on it (Bar for chatrooms). Any issues you find with it?

Various reasons...Okay, my next question. My iBook has a US-layout keyboard (the physical layout is US). I want to change it to a Uk/Irish layout. However, even after I change settings in the International options, the actual layout remains the same.

As this is a Unix system and not a Linux one, I can't just run "loadkeys gb" and be done with it. :(

Just curious, but what's the difference between a U.S. physical layout and an Irish/UK one. I thought all the keyboards were the same.

Several keys are in different positions

Its annoying if you're doing scripting work, as you have to relearn the entire keyboard. The hash (#) key is only accessible via Alt+3, for instance. You get used to it though.

And while on the topic, I have to say, I'm starting to like OSX. I can see why a lot of Linux people are moving to it.

Aqua has a polish that no Linux WM/DE can match (although it trails behind in features and configurability, imo), is years ahead of Windows XP technology-wise and is rather nice to use after you set up virtual desktops.

Sound mixing and wireless networking Just Work, things which are always nightmares in Linux.

Package managment is a doddle (although Gentoo's Portage trounces it easily), which is nice.

And its all on top of a BSD base, so once you get to grips with the filesystem, you're all set. You can use pretty much all Linux and BSD tools within the OS-as I write this, I'm using nano to edit my clamav script and configuration while the Imagemagick suite of tools is being installed by Portage.

On the flipside, the keyboard is a constant annoyance-I basically have to use a US layout, editing keymaps is a byzanthine task and the one-button mouse is somewhat flakey, although I do like the reliance on keyboard shortcuts, as its faster.

I've tried Camino. Looks pretty, runs at about the same speed as Firefox, doesn't have the same customizability.

I found a Firefox plugin that adds extensive keyboard shortcuts. So I guess problem solved.

:) Looks like we've got the same keyboard.

OH! OH! Holding down Alt and delete (backspace) on my PowerBook deletes the WHOLE word. F*ck me .... I'm a power user. :D
