SuSE 9.3 Installable Released

Just installed SuSE 9.3 this weekend. Its available via a DVD that comes with a German magazine CT. They seem to have some kind of exclusive rights deal on it at the moment, but it should be available for download in the next couple of weeks.

Centrino support has improved once again (non-existent in 9.1, acceptable in 9.2) and there's now no need to do crazy things with drivers to get it working - support is out-of-the-box. Defaulting to the crazy laptop touch pad drivers have been ditched (thank God!) in favour of XFree86 standard drivers. The option to install the specific drivers is still available, but optional.

The major improvements are in the software packages provided. KDE 3.4 is another marginal improvement on 3.3, but its nice to see some of the buggy issues being sorted. The real gem for me is the new version of Amarok media player. One of my biggest Linux gripes was the lack of a media library-based app, but this has been well-and-truely addressed by Amarok. I find myself resenting the fact that it isn't available aswell for Windows. :)

Unfortunately, the FTP servers are still a little bare when it comes to 9.3 packages. Unfortunately, I still can't get my hands on the gcc compiler and makeutils, which is an obvious problem. I'm sure the full range will become available with the wider release in the next couple of weeks.

In short, I think Novell have done a very good job with 9.3, and its the closest thing I've seen so far to challenging Windows on the home desktop. Its not there yet, but its not a bad effort.

KDE 3.4 and Amarok 1.2 are huge improvments over their previous versions, even with my complaints over swamping the user in pointless options. I emerged both the last day as I'm setting up an account for my sister, and I was well impressed with them. I much prefer Gnome as a work desktop, but KDE is many times better for new users.

On the flipside, I'm not a real fan of Suse. Top class distro, but a bit..too much, imo. Heh.
