    Hi,

I'm interested in building my own PC. This is something I haven't done before. Ideally, I would like a PC that I can use when working from home, I work in networks/voice systems so this would mean LAN management, Telnet, remote control etc.

I would also like to use the PC for some gaming, would mostly be stuff like online Pro Evo and some FPS. I'm interested in learning about Linux/Unix so I would like to have have both Windows and Linux on the PC.

Anyway, after looking at posts on this forum and around I have come up with the following component list:

Case: Antec SLK1650B Miditower, Blackw/350W PSU

    Motherboard: Asus A8N-E, nForce4 Ultra, Socket-939,ATX, S-ATA, GbLAN, Sound, PCI-Ex16

    Graphics: Gainward GeForce 6600GT 128MB 2ns GDDR3PCI-Express,"Ultra/1960PCX Tv-out, DVI

    CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz Socket 939,512KB, BOXED w/fan

    RAM: Corsair Value S. PC3200 DDR-DIMM 1024MBKit w/two matched Value Select 512MB

    HDD: Samsung SpinPoint P120S 200GB SATA28MB 7200RPM NCQ

    CD/DVD:
LG DVDRW Dual 16x16x4x40 GSA-4163RBBBlack OEM

    LCD: IIyama 17" ProLite E431S-S TCO-99Monitor, Silver, 8ms, DVI-D

Have I picked any dud components here? If so, could anyone recommend good replacements?

Not sure but maybe that psu is a little under powered.
Why not get a 6800gt? better than 6600gt and not much more at the moment (jes has them cheap apparentlly)
other than that i think it looks ok

    Where are u buying?
Go for a vience core in the CPU
    Maybe some faster ram?

No point in getting faster ram as 3200 is ddr400 which is what the fsb runs at (200mhz X2) unless you mean something with tighter timings.
    And yeah venice core

and why not run the ram at 250 or 300fsb?

jozi, If you get something like PC-4400 ram its basically the same thing as getting PC-3200 with tight timings, except the default speeds will be different. Should do pretty much the same thing in the end

Parts you have picked are fine. If you can squeez it, another 30 euro or so gets you a 250gig harddrive.

PSU is fine: friend has similar spec with a hiper 350w PSU and it runs fine.

But I would consider a bigger PSU in the future if you are going to add more hard drives and a bigger gfx card.

As some of the lads have pointed out have a look at jes computers or comtech.de as they are both selling 6800GTS for aroung 260 EURO.

    Worth a look.

Hmm...the 6800GTS for €260 is interesting. One thing though....it's AGP whereas the card I have listed above is PCI Express. Would it not be better to go with the newer interface or is it much of a muchness?

Found all these components on Komplett. The PSU comes with the case, as was mentioned, I could always swap it out later on if it wasn't adequate.

The CPU on Komplett has a Venice core.

    Thansk for the advice!

yeah the €260 6800gt is an agp card.

you are better off to stick with the newer Pci-e format. The 6600gt is a card which will run todays games fine, but may not have a long lifespan.

A 6800gt should last a bit longer, but you can always get the 6600 for now and upgrade later when the 6800gt costs €150!!!
