Looks like it's an install issue.

Change the resolution. Right click on desktop>properties>setting. 1024x768 would be the min but it could be 1280x1024 depending on the laptop.

Use the ethernet, much more reliable and easier to setup.

Sounds like its running on the default XP graphics card drivers. Find out what graphics card it has and get the latest ones.

EDIT: Use this if you can't find the details. http://lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en

Middle clicking (click on the mouse wheel) on them by any chance, this caught me out when I first started using it.

    What did you do?

Did you get the right drivers?

Find out what graphics card it has. The program above will tell you what it is. Then go to the Nvidia/ATI/Intel site and get the drivers. Or post the details up here and someone will point you in the right direction.

Not sure if you've checked this yet but: try here
Specifically down the very bottom and the video drivers section.

Here's the link to the correct gfx driver: Dell link

As for the original error message - it looks like something is running in the background. In the task manager under processes look for an entry called NTVDM - there should be something indented underneath it. Let us know what that is. It's possible that something is loading on startup which runs as a 16-bit app.

try right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting task manager. Minimise any other app in case it's hiding behind them. This sounds strange tho cos default option is always on top. I think I'd recommend doing a Spybot scan and maybe a HiJack this one as well.

Not sure what the story is there - I'll have a look around.

Can I ask you where you got that calendar on your desktop - I've been looking for something like that.

Re the task manager, double-click the icon to restore it then in the options see if 'minimize on use' and 'hide when minimised' are checked.

How about running a different process viewer like say HiJack This and you can try killing Task Manager and see if it Ctrl-Alt-Del will work after that.
