Flight-paths in Dublin

Has anyone noticed that there seems to be an increase in air-traffic over the Rathfarnham, Knocklyon, Tallaght direction recently - there used to be hardly any.

I thought that the main flight path to Dublin airport was the direct one over Howth / Portmarnock.

    Anyone know why?

they use a few different approaches depending on the wind etc.The Howth / Portmarnock path is the main one with something like 80% using this route

There has been alot more planes passing high over Dublin....presumable going to from the UK and the US.

It is nothing new. There are a lot of planes that approach the airport to land from the west side. Some of those come in over the southside of the city and head west and curl back into land. They have been doing it for years. I live only a few miles from Rathfarnham, in Kilmacud, and they have been flying in that direction over us for as long as I can remember, so they'd have been going over the Tallaght and Rathfarnham areas too, or not far from them. Maybe they have slightly re-adjusted the path bringing it nearer there.

The wind was easterly a few days ago, and was for several days, so that's why there was more aircraft than usual being vectored in over the the south city. Arrivals from the south are vectored over the south city then given a right turn in to join the approach for the easterly runway at Dublin Airport. Arrivals from the east and north are vectored in north of Dublin.

Yeah, I'm over in London a lot, and roughly half of the time we come in over the southside, up over Clondalkin (you can see Liffey Vallley perfectly, I can pick out my house, it's great) and onto the west runway. If you're driving down the N4 westbound you can see them coming in. Whatever way the road runs, the planes look really low.

Yeah that's the easterly runway, coming in from the south east, as most London flights do. The majority of the time the westerly runway is in use, where you commence the approach over the Irish Sea and come in past Howth and Portmarnock etc.

I have been meaning to ask a question about this. I am in Cabinteely, over the last few months we have noticed a huge increase in flights over our area. A lot of them very, very low. This was definately not the case a year ago.

Well nothing has changed, so it's not a new thing.

You'll only see planes coming in low over Cabinteely when the easterly runway is being used. They were on the easterly runway for most of last week due to an easterly breeze. The wind is westerly now again, so you should get some peace for a while. :)

Caused by the exponential growth in southsiders flying to exotic locations. Are ye sure ye want an airport on the southside?

    Try this website.

    http://www.flytecomm.com/cgi-bin/trackflight

If you enter an airline and the flight number of an airplane in flight, it will show you the flight plan and where the plan is .
    Quite cool

I flew in from Manchester last Monday. Instead of coming in over Howth and onto that runway, we flew in over Skerries and right around to approach from the west for landing. Anytime I have flown in from Britain before, we have always landed coming in eastwards, so I was a bit surprised.

I was flying back from Paris yesterday with Air France/CityJet... on the way in and out we went down the irish coast... quite clearly I could see dun laoighre harbour etc.. Didn't come in the usual route over portmarnock....

First for me anyway. With the increase in flights these days, Im sure they have to balance the load...
