XP Pro & Home - Problems

We have 2 machines at home. A desktop with Win XP Pro and a laptop with Win XP Home. Recently I have been having problems when I want to open the shared folder on the desktop from the laptop. Some kind of error about permissions. When I look at the sharing properties of the folder on the desktop, the sharing option is not selected.

When I try to share the folder it will not allow me. I think it says something about a service server or server service.

I dont understand, because up until last week I could access the shared folders from the laptop, and now that I cant, it wont even let me reshare the folders.

Has it something to do with a clash between Pro and Home or is it something im doing wrong?

On the machine from which you are serving:
    Click start>run
    Type services.msc
Goto the "Server" service. Ensure that it is running, and ensure it has been set to "Automatic" as opposed to disabled or manual.

Also, see if the NETBEUI protocol is installed along with your TCP/IP protocol. you need NETBEUI for proper sharing. Its not installed by default but its on the XP cd or you can google it. Its had me stumped a few times!

Im just after noticing now that my internet connection is a bit shaky. Connecting sometimes and timing out others. Also connecting to the shared folders, sometimes it tells me that I cant. Is it because I started the server, or do I have to start or enable something else?

What type of internet connection you using? broadband or dialup? more than likely its your ethernet cable.
