i had a problem that involved repairing my installation of windows. during the repair it said come files couldn't be copied and i ignored them. dont know if that has anything to do with it tho. since then a file called winsta.dll had an error but i managed to fix that. ms word wouldn't open and then when i tried to reinstall it it said there was an incomplete istallation of service pack 1. reinstalled sp1 and that problems fixed. this happens since the repair too and this one i cant fix:
    prob2.jpg
the first time i hover over a button the thing pops up properly but if i move to the next one the text stays the same but the size changes. as you can see in the bottom one i was over the show desktop button and then moved over to the messenger one. all that black is the size the thing is supposed to be. its more of an annoyance than anything else but any ideas to fix it?

and whats the proper name for those things?

tooltips aren't they? did you replace the winsta.dll after it was corrupted? if so then you may have gotten the wrong version of the dll, try getting one from an updated xp installation, and have your installation updated also

You could try the System File checker

To manually invoke the system file checker, be sure you have administrative access then go to the command prompt or click Start - Run and type:

    sfc /scannow

The system will immediately begin to check all the current system files and restore the cached approved copies. You may be asked to insert the Windows CD as well during the restore.

After you perform a system file restore you should install the newest service pack so you are running the most current, Microsoft approved system files
