Ok, i've got a 556mb download file (zip file) and i have a 512mb memory stick.
How can i compress this zip file further?
    Or what are other options?

you could rar it with maximum compression, doubtfull you'll get it down to 512 megs, you can also split it

Has the file been zipped with Max compression? Even so, I reckon it's going to be a tight fit.

    you could try winrar: www.rarsoft.com

and use the highest compression. Of course it does depend on how compressible the files are in the actual archive.

    WinRAR doesn't do it.
What about splitting the file up?
This way i could take it home in 2 goes.
Anybody recommend a program for this?

Use winrar, and specify that you want each "part" to be a max of 10 megs in size. Then you can transfer em over bit by bit. I think the option is just beneath where you select the compression strength.

www.7zip.org is good, better than WinZip 8 on certain formats

    Zip file eh ?
Compressing a compressed file is a bad idea since the first pass will have randomised the original data.
Probably best to uncompress it first and then recompress the original contents again. If there were serveral files in it you might leave out those you know you don't need.

    What the capt'n said.

Uncompress it then 7zip it with "ultra" compression level. You'll need a fast machine for a large file like that, but 7zip should easily get you the last 10% IMO (once it's not a compressed file already like an mpeg file or whatever).

Winrar-schminrar. ;) 7zip's your only man. I've done independent tests.

So have I, and I found the opposite :) What were your test criteria?
