Servicing Car question

I have Golf which is a year and two months old.I used to get my previous cars serviced with the usual advice(a year after purchase or 10,000,miles).

Now seeing as the car i have now is just gone over 7,000miles(wife uses it mostly, school runs etc).I was going to wait till it reached the 10,000 mark till i got it serviced as getting it serviced in a Volkswagen gargage can be expensive.

Now i got into car today and a message popped up on digital read out-"service due at 4,900 miles or 20 days from now".

Im just wondering what the hell is the 20days about,im never going to do 4,900 miles in 20 days.Anyone from a Volkswagen like to comment or any mechanics like to put me in picture.

    Thanks

Surely they cant have the car not start on you?

That sounds a lil mad to me! Its only a reminder!

What if you set off on a 3 week holiday in the south of France and decide to go on a road trip.......just say!

So you are going to be gone for more than 20 days and doing over 5K miles on you nice holiday going to see the sites etc.......

..........surely they cant leave you stranded in a forgein country......with the dash saying.......your car wont start cos you never serviced it???

Well never say never, nah I was kidding Curran. :D Just seemed weird to say service it after 4,900miles or 20days from now.Its on 7,000miles now so adding nearly the 4,900miles would be well past the normal 10,000miles service mark.

    Waves fist at digital dash!

dont worry about it too much, many golfs including mine(03) are set on the extended service where its filled with a fully synth oil costing 50 euro a gallon at the factory. my car didnt indicate need for servicing until it reached 19000 miles, after 2 years use. ps mine is a dutch import rhd car bought from motorpoint in the uk. but i changed the oil at 16 myself as i think 20 is alot for a petrol engine.

anyway urs is set to the normal service, it only needs an oil change now or in a few thousand and main servicing at 20. im not sure whether u want to mantain a dealer history though as it can pay for itself come resale.

Just getting money out of ya!

Service it when you feel it needs to be serviced !!!

....only thing id be concerned about is......you were to bring it back to VW for a trade in.....the facts are there on the computer.......and they'd be saying.....ah you neglected her a bit!

But they could say the same if a manufactuer picked up a Serivce Manual

Yeah i know what you mean and thanks for info(Curran&Iomb).

I've always kept up a good service history in past, the first serivce on a Golf last time i got one before this car was €150 and second service is €255 and €255 after that unless it needs something else.

Will book it in so,takes a month in Lumleys.

    Thanks again

If you dont service the car as per indicated this could affect your warranty.

I used to work in a VW dealership and not getting it serviced when the reccomended time can not only void the warranty but can affect the re-sale. It would be just an oil change, air filter and plugs, along with just the usual checks. The 20 days is just to keep the service intervals regular which looks neater on the service book so keeps the re-sale value

that reminded is easy to get rid of. i know on my car i had it in for a service recently and they forgot to reset the reminder. i brought it back down to them and the guy showed me how to do it. you just push in you miles reset button and hold it down for a few seconds and this will reset it for another 10,000 miles.

Well got car serviced and got a bit of a shock at the cost.€231 inc vat.€17 euro excluding vat for each wiper  .It would of been €12 dearer only I asked them to refund me on the litre of oil I got to top up oil with car,but I had some from last time I topped up so I didnt need it.

This is cars first service.Does it seem abit OTT to anyone?.

That's actually quite good, was that including labour? The wipers are shockingly dear though. Over 700 euro can be spent on an hour and a halfs service, it's just scheduled(SP?) to take longer

Yeah it was including labour €231 plus labour plus extras.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,376 ✭✭✭Squirrel

    I'd find that quite reasonable

I get my car serviced from my main Toyota dealer since it was new, last one cost €149 including VAT and labour.

This did not include new wipers though. :D

I suppose it depends what needs doing but I would have thought €231 is steep even for a VW dealer.

Well I havent a clue as to how much wiper blades are in a shop but at €17 plus vat a blade seems expensive. It said on the report that the old ones were damaged. They seemed to do the job for me.Anyway the parts came to €91.24,the usual stuff like.

    Oil Filter....€5.02
    Sump washer...€0.61
Windscreen additive...€1.50(had already topped this up last week myself, but its only €1.50)
    Sundries...€12.70(whats this?)
    Envoirmental charge....€5.00
    Oil 10w/40...30.45

Then the wipers on top at €17.98 each. This is all ex-vat.

Would you not just buy wipers yourself from any motorfactors, and stick them on yourself. I happen to know a lad who works in a motorfactors and he even comes out and puts them on for me.

Fookin Volkswagen and their costs. Have they started making the wipers optional extras from new yet. seen as basically everything else is optional.

My uncle bought a brand new "supposedly" top of the range diesel passat, 6spd 130Hp engine back in 2002, and it didnt even come with fookin mudflaps or a cd player in a car costing nearly £26000Punts.

How anyone can still be bothered them ould VW`s at this stage is beyond me. You can get just as reliable cars for less with a decent spec. look at Peugeot diesels for example,,, the pug HDI diesel is better than the VW Tdi over-rated/over priced ****e. Sorry, if i went off topic a bit. :D
