HELP - Internet Access Query

Just got a Dell laptop at work, its got internal bluetooth, a/b/g LAN card! etc.etc. I'm a complete nOOb to all this so please bear with me.

Boss told me to ring Vodafone for mobile connect card to get internet, however when I turned it on for the first time a wireless connectivity screen came up to inform me that it had found a network connection! (802.11) & I was able to browse the net at a decent speed. This happened at my desk with bluetooth turned on in my phone (however I cannot connect at home), my office PC has a Netopia Caymen broadband router attached to it but I don't think it has a wireless facility (2m away). The only conclusion I could reach is that a company near us in our Industrial Estate has a wireless network which my laptop 'jumped' on.

Anybody out there have a clue as to how it got online?
Any advice on the best form of internet access for this laptop would be greatly appreciated (i'll be using it in transit & on-sites mostly), all I know is the Vodafone card?
