Agree - BERLIN, BERLIN and BERLIN again.

best city in Germany, by far....
If not the best in Europe!

Berlin is 3 cities in one. West Berlin (just like any western European capital, all the shops you need). East Berlin, much better conserved, e.g Unter Den Linden with more classical style buildings than you could shake a stick at, "thanks to" the communists they kept most of the classical buildings, whereas with the West being destroyed so much by the war, it was practically rebuilt from scratch.

Then there's Potsdammer Platz - a brand new huge glass and metal office/commercial area, that arose out of what were the ashes of no-mans land, the area between East and West Berlins that was the buffer zone that if you were caught trying to cross from the east you would have been shot on the spot.

Berlin has it's centres, the 3 above, then it has all the smaller zones, such as Kreuzberg, Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, being the better places for nightlife...

but there is one think to remember don't mention the war. I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.... :D

Yet another vote for Berlin - Munich and Hamburg are both nice too but as a weekend destination Berlin is fantastic :)

Not much in Frankfurt am Main to be honest... Run of the mill city really. There are a few things to see but not enough for a weekend I think...

Heidelberg is a lovely place. Nice part of the country.

But Berlin is really cool... So much to do. So much to see. Such a city of contrasts.

I stayed in old East Berlin on Alexander Platz. Park Inn hotel. Decent rates, good quality, modern hotel.

The city is steeped in culture and history that actually a weekend isnt long enough.

In the east there is Karl-Marx Allee, which is a must see. Fernsehturm on Alex Platz. Unter den Linden with all the museums and cultural buildings. Fantastic walk down Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg gate into the west.

The Reichstag (parliament building) is just to the right of the b,burg gate. You can go up to the dome at the top, which is pretty spectacular. Queues can be long enough, so get down there early.

To the left of b,burg gate is towards Potsdamer Platz, with the Sony Centre etc. Modern indoor/outdoor building with a spectacular roof/canopy thingy... Has to be seen.

The jewish museum is a bit of a walk past potsdamer platz but the actual building of the jewish museum is a must see. I wasn't that impressed with the museum myself, but there are a few things in there that are definitely worth the look around.

The checkpoint charlie museum is really good as well. Some really interesting stories and tales there of people trying to jump the wall etc...

Going out on the town for nights out are really good. Whatever you want... they have it.

I had 2 nights out. One in a techno/dance type place, which was really cool and another night in a punk club which was wierd but cool... 2 totally contrasting nights but both equally brilliant.

There are some areas of the city which are dodgy enough, but any of the lonely planet or time out books identify these areas well enough...

Berlin must be a beautiful city, unfortuniatly never visited it.

Saw some pictures from Nurnberg on the Internet today and the city looks very nice to me with lots of old buildings. Maybe it's worth a visit if you travel to the southern part of Germany (Bayern).

Berlin, the energy of the place is fantastic. If you want romanantic take a day trip to Dresden which is only a couple of hours by train. Frankfurt is the last City I'd visit in Germany excluding the Rhur

munich is nice! really great beautiful place with alot to see and do, hostels are nice and the country and alps are close by. nothing bad to say about the place.
Heidelberg is a great place to, a bit quite but its definitely worth a visit , the city is in a beatiful spot and is enjoyable.
cologne, is a bit **** to be honest, not much really there a bit of a dormotory town for bonn.
Berlin is ok but I think it is pretty overated, like its got a great historuy , but i can only think of "99 red balloon's" and late 80's and early 90's punk music / anarchists when i think of berlin and my trip there didn't really change those views.
But it is a place that should still be seen, for the sake of it.

BERLIN is the business...... go on go there. an old 1920's department store turned into a squat/pub thing with bonfires outside...deadly.

For cultural stuff go to Nurenburg, I used to live there, it was hitlers perfect City, you can see the park where the rallies were held and the zeppelin was launched. The old castle is there and the place where albret durer lived...

If you are in any way interested in art, especially the modern version, then
Dusseldorf is well worth a visit. There you will find some of the best museums
on the continent. The city itself is not as tourist friendly as say Berlin. For
example, it can be tricky to find a restaurant with a menu in English.

Dusseldorf is also a short train journey from Cologne which has already
been recommended in this thread. More great museums, a monstrous
    cathedral and great beer.

I take it you are travelling shortly. I visited in mid autumn and it can rain
at that time. And then some.

Another vote for Berlin with Hamburg a close second.

    Munich!!!!
Best, close with Berlin, city in Germany.
Capital of culture. Capital of Bavaria.
Bavaria itself is the most cultured place in Germany.
Weather is great, especially around this time.
Plenty of Museums. Parks. Lovely park going through the center of the city along the River Isar.
Be sure to go to the Deutsches Museum if you go there.
Close to the Alps for a nice day trip, the zugspitze--highest mountain in the land.
And if your a real Irish wo/man they have plenty of Beer gardens. Plenty of people know basic English if not great. The youth from school and the elderly from the American occupiers.
During summer there is a raft you can go on from outside the city on the river isar. They have parties on the rafts!!!--Food, drink, toilets :p . Great craic. Didnt do it last year but this year I will be. If youa re interested in this try to book a bit in advance. And try have a group(if possible).
Nightlife is great. Transport, like most European Cities, is fabulous(too bad for Dublin eh).
As you can see I recommend München, Bayern(Bavaria) :)
