either with a screwdriver or with the help of your local friendly jeweller. If it's just a battery let the jeweller do it.

without seeing a pic of the exact back, i would guess that an ordinary watch like a ben sherman will just clip off, but for this you will need a very sharp and strong edge, possibly a victorinox (swiss army) blade, but dont be too upset if you bend the blade slightly, if the watch is bezelled it may need a special tool but this is highly unlikely for a fashion watch, sorry but without seeing the actual back i cant be more precise, make sure that you dont loose the seal when opening !!

there's an implement called a jeweller's tool or something like it which is used to take the back off bevelled watches. It can be expensive to buy though, so you're probably as well to take into a jewellers.

I agree with the others, take it to a good jewellers. I collect old watches and the damage that can be done to them by inexpert hands can be all to plain to see, especially if the watch has any claim to water resistance. As Thumper Long has said most fashion watches have clip on backs, but I've seen some with the screw back too. As for the reason for it stopping it's probably just the battery and if it's anything else there's little you could do even if you got the back off. It can still be repaired though, by replacing the whole internals as they are very cheap. Shop around though.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

if you hit anything hard enough with a hammer it will eventually open...

but i'd say to bring it to the jewellers, there's a good one for watches above PAB travel on abbey street but most jewellers do batteries (If they don't they'll be able to recommend a good place for you)

    hope this helps
