Will I fit in an X19?

After years of extensive day dreaming, am serious about buying a fun classic car as a second car. Always loved the X19 from childhood - when i could fit in one! Am 6'2'' and carrying a couple of stone more than necessary. Am looking to know firstly if i will fit in when i track one down, and thoughts from anyone with one / experience of one, is it a viable car to drive semi-regularly? If not, any suggestions on something similar?

    thanks guys

I drove an X19 once and while I am 5'11" and average build I found I had plenty of room in it :)

The main problem will be finding one to sit in. I cannot recall the last time I saw one.

Have you got a picture? That'll help us.

Oh you'll fit alright - there is plenty of legroom and you sit very low in the car. The headlinings tend to detach from the roof panel and rub your hair/head and they are very narrow but unless you are HUGE then you'll fit. You are welcome to come to my house and sit in mine if you want. Mines not running though so no sliding it around bends just yet...

Anyway if you really are HUGE you could just take the roof out all the time. As for practical every day use - of course thay can be used. Just don't plan carrying more than a wallet and a pint of milk! Spend as much as you can afford and look at several to see the variation between a good one and a bad one. PM me for advice if you find a particular one you want to buy.

It should also be pointed out that they are 1) Fiats 2) built in Italy in the eighties 3) use parts from 127's and Ritmos 4) very prone to rust 5) not reliable and can go bang at any moment.

Saw a mint black one whizzing round one of Swords many roundabouts, Sunday I think. There are a few on Autotrader.co.uk

These guys have the most extensive stock of X1/9 parts and often have cars for sale. Drop Mark a line and tell him what you want...

There's nothing inherently dangerous about the XI/9.

Just treat it somewhat like a old 911

Thats right, unless I'm driving it...

And anyway, cars don't kill people. People kill people. Drive properly, live longer. This is a classic cars forum - many classic cars don't have any safety features whatsoever, sometimes they come with drum brakes, crossply tyres and no seatbelts so you are buying into a lifestyle which doesn't guarantee longevity. The X1/9 is no worse than any twenty year old car - and anyway people die in Volvos every day.

    Aaargh!
found an X19 to play with for the afternoon and, with the targa top off,
yesterday went for a blast..... its a great car but it's sooo uncomfortable for me to drive.. fitted in it (yeah!!! don't have to diet) but i found it really awkard to clutch when changing gear - had to keep my left leg and ankle at an angle to use... reminded me of an old uno i used to have - i sold it after 2 months!- back to the drawing board!1

The curse of Italian cars! Long arm/short leg. That said my Merc 190 is'nt the best - I've just ordered an aftermarket 35cm wheel so I have more room for me left leg action.
