    Doing TY.
Although tbh, I just want to be out of school, so I get moments of wishing I'd gone straight to fifth year.

Ah, but its a good waste of a year! :D

I think it would be better going straight into 5th year because we would still be in study mode and after a doss 4th year it's gona be really hard to get back into studying again!

Heading into fifth year myself. When I saw the thread title I was thinking "aww, I miss out on all that" but then I realised, I'll be in college when you're all doing your leaving cert.

    So, in conclusion;

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!1111three

There are alot of arguments for and against said TY course, anyway this isn't the place to get into it I suppose.

One word of advice, don't waste the year, odds are you'll be home and free at around 4, alot of free time, not taking up a sport and not going on a few of the school trips were my biggest regrets about the year. Getting a job was good too was great, I'd recommend that.

The year is really what you make of it yourself, not too good relying on the school, alot of chances to mature and get alot of new experience and find out alot about alot of things. My god ive said the word "alot" too much.

I have this notion of getting "involved" in everything and starting a new hobby, but I know my procrastinating nature will win through. I'll waste the year and spend fifth year panicking about how everything has slipped out of my head.
Other than that, I'm looking forward to it! :p It just seems like an interesting, fun year to do, plus some of the activities seem cool.

The activities are great, sailing, rock climbing, paintballing and the odd holiday, I really regret wasting away most of that year.

    What he said.

Now we're all going to discuss our college courses and not allow the TYers to think about theirs. *excludes people*

I'm doing TY, & I'm so glad because this year the subject choices ended up being sort of crap for 5th year 'cos so little were doing it....plus I've been constantly exhausted since December & would like a break...I was so stressed at the mocks I ended up getting shingles. I'm going to take part in everything I can & hopefully learn to swim (finally!).

Paintballing? We get none of that. I am going to croatia though....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

Im not doing TY. Im to old to do TY,Ill be 17 next January, although there is a girl in my yr who will be 17 in November and doing TY...

The French students are going to France with the TY students next tear, so that should be fun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Teachers in my school are saying unless some teacher WANTS to take us on a trip, then we're not going. And since they all seem to hate my year, it doesn't seem likely.

Apparently we're getting a fun fun fun talk from some make-up woman, and we also get to do catering as a subject...

But it should be fun solely because I will be able to do other stuff with my time as opposed to homework, etc. We're gonna do Spanish and Japanese though, so that should be interesting.

just outta curiosity, for those who are in schools where TY is compulsory - what is the cost of doing the course? Actually what does your school charge to do TY - mine is €270 upfront before 01.07.2005

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭grimloch

Mine was about that too, things like buses/trips and other stuff like a drama teacher or whatever costs a bit to get done.

Paintballing was mentioned, I think we organised that oursleves through the school, great fun altogether.

Teachers are always looking for a trip to go on. no school i've heard hasn't gone on at least one trip. We had the some islands, France and Germany to choose from.

TY costs? I know you pay for trips you go on/whatever but I thought that the year itself...maybe I'm just slow.

I'm doing TY and I can't wait! It's not compulsary in our school but I'd say the principal would love if it was. She used work in the department in the Transition year section, and she's big into it. Basically, she portrays going straight into 5th year as: DOOM! I really don't know how anyone could have chosen that way after the talk she gave us! The TYs are treated so well in our school, it's scary. Sometimes it's like this is their year, and feck everyone else! :p
They do tonnes of stuff though, and everyone can go on an exchange trip if they want to. The annual musical is the biggest thing I think.

I can't wait for TY. My school has a brilliant course. I'm also so happy I won't be diving into the LC! I can take a year off stress to get some more music grades done, go out more, take up new hobbies etc. I plan to start my novel, finish my collection of short stories, have a laugh. Woo TY.

Unless you go to some crazily rich private school I assume you'll have to pay for it like the rest of us .

The costs are for different things you do, as far as I know. I'm going to be 17 next May, & I thought that was pretty old, but November? Whoa. Our school is small so there aren't any trips abroad for single years, they're open to anybody above 1st year. I went on a skiing trip this year to the Czech Republic, & I think that there's going to be an Italy tour next February I'll try to go on.

    That makes sense.

    17 next May? Everyone's so...old! ;) I'll be 16 next March, I think that's ok for TY though.
