New system or upgrade?

Im thinking of either upgrading my current machine with an extra 1024 of ram and shiney new 6800 gt or x800/850 series gfx card.

    Current machine is:

    P4 2.8 Mhz 800 FSB O/C @ 3.2 Mhz
    Abit AS8 (Socket 775, I865 chipset, AGP)
1024 mb Kingston DDR 400mhz,PC4000 [2048 after upgrade]
    80gig Maxtor 6Y080L0 7,200 rpm HD
    Radeon 9800 PRO 256 mb [6800 GT256 after uppgrade]
    SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-348B
    19" SAMSUNG SyncMaster 957p Monitor
    Antec 480Watt TruBlue PSU
    Audigy2 ZS 7.1 Soundcard

or selling the above system [my brother is looking to buy it] and buying the following :
Obviously ill be keeping current monitor etc.

    Cooler Master Cavalier Case
Fortron Source power supply ATX 550watt
    Saphire ATI Express 200p, socket-939,atx sata PCI-Ex
    AMD Athlon 64 4000+2.4 ghz,socket-939 1mb
    TwinMOS 2048mb DDR 4000 400mhz
    Nvidia 6800 GT 256mb GDDRs PCI-Express
Seagate Barracuda 250 GB HD 8mb 7200 rpm

Unsure of cd/dvd drive as yet or whether to go for x800/850 series gfx card

The difference in either upgrading and buying new system taking into account the sale of existing machine is bout 400 euros.
If i was to sell, the only benefit would be going from P4 2.8 800 fsb to an AMD Athlon 64 4000 2.4 ghz 1mb and going from AGP to PCI-Express and of course a bigger HD.
Is this worth selling and going for complete new machine or would i be better to upgrade as suggested and save 400 euros?
    Thoughts appreciated guys.

    Upgrade.

Better in the long run and you can go dual core with the 939 mobo in the future.

If cost is a problem trim back the cpu a little: no point spending a packet on it if you are going to be replacing it in a while.

Also a 4000+ is only slightly cheapet than a 4200+ dual core chip......

4000+ is not worth the money. Either buy a 3500+ and spend the money you save (€200 ish) on something else or go whole hog a get a 4200+ dual core.

Ok thanks but one question, how does my P4 compare to the 64 4000 and is pic-E a huge difference than my current setup?

Pci express is only the new standard for gfx cards: no/little speed difference between agp or pci-e cards.

Pci express is just more future proof. The high end gfx cards of the next gen will come in AGP but the gen after that will be doubtful.

A 4000+ will mean the difference of 20-30 frames depending on the game vs a p4 2.8.

If you are into games that use a lot of cpu, a new cpu will make a huge difference.

Would a 4200+ DC be much less in another 6months?

    Prolly a wee bit.

AMD will be releasing socket M2 processors and motherboards in 2006 which will drive prices down a bit.

Not to worry though plenty of life left in socket 939 :-)
