Hey guys, I’m doing some research on computer crime (no crime in particular – just how widespread it might be). Was hoping that you might take the time to fill it out (Mods – if inappropriate – please lock it). I’ll let the questionnaire run for two days and will see how she goes. I’d appreciate if you could give me some help or any other relevant info that you may consider necessary. All feedback will be appreciated.
<EDIT> Just realised that it sounds like a marketing survey - trust me its not, it for my college dissertation on Internet and Computer Security and the victims of crime! </Edit>

    Cheers, Mutz

    1. How often do you use a computer (work + home)

    · Light User (less than 5 hours a week)
    · Medium User (between 5 and 10 hours a week)
    · Heavy User (more than 10 hours a week)

    2. How would you rate your knowledge of Pc’s (Workings of software and hardware)

    · Poor
    · Fair
    · Good

    3. How much time per week (hours) would you spend on the Internet?

    4. How would you rate your knowledge of the Internet (Security and Safety)

    · Poor
    · Fair
    · Good

    5. Do you use the Internet for services such as banking, bill payment, purchasing items, communication etc? If so give examples

    6. If purchasing something on the net, have you ever become suspicious about the site you wish to purchase off. If so, please give examples of what you saw.

    7. Is there anything in particular that you would look for before making any transactions online?

    8. Have you ever been victim of any form of online crime, such as fraud, mail threats, information theft, intrusion, phishing, viruses etc? If so, indicate what it consisted of.

    9. If you were ever the victim of computer related crime, what would you do or whom would you turn to?

    10. Any relevant points to make regarding this questionnaire?

    4:good
5:yes (banking: balances only, I don't complete any transactions online, as far as purchases go only things which I can't obtain easily/cheaply locally)
6:yes (no security on forms, cancelled purchase and rang them up instead). dodgy looking html/forms will make me think twice.
7:ssl at the very least with signed certs, worldpay.
    8:no
    9:no

    1. How often do you use a computer (work + home)

    · Heavy User (more than 10 hours a week)

    2. How would you rate your knowledge of Pc’s (Workings of software and hardware)

    · Good

    3. How much time per week (hours) would you spend on the Internet?

    5 to 10

    4. How would you rate your knowledge of the Internet (Security and Safety)

    · Good

    5. Do you use the Internet for services such as banking, bill payment, purchasing items, communication etc? If so give examples

Yes, purchasing general consumer goods, CDs, DVDs, Books, computer bits etc

    6. If purchasing something on the net, have you ever become suspicious about the site you wish to purchase off. If so, please give examples of what you saw.

Yes, an uncountable number of offers too good to be true and a few sites that seemed to have appeared very recently, not be mentioned anywhere, have an unproffesional design, oh and p.o. boxes as addresses.

    7. Is there anything in particular that you would look for before making any transactions online?

I'd always check for recomendations from others, prefferably on boards but there's a couple of sites somewhere that purely host feedback of various shopping sites (can't remember their addresses now, I've only been using sites I know well lately)

    8. Have you ever been victim of any form of online crime, such as fraud, mail threats, information theft, intrusion, phishing, viruses etc? If so, indicate what it consisted of.

The odd virus, and a few browser hijacks.

    9. If you were ever the victim of computer related crime, what would you do or whom would you turn to?

    Batman ?

    10. Any relevant points to make regarding this questionnaire?

Generally instances of computer crime against a person that I've heard about are down to the victims stupidity. For some reason people seem quite willing to give their bank or credit card details to any random person asking for it.

    5. Banking - Yes, bill payment - through banking sites, purchasing items - yes but only buy stuff I have a good knowledge of already (e.g. tech stuff) or have a good returns policy. communication - dont do voip or anything like that cos there are always free ways.

    6. Only purchase off sites that have certs (i take a quick glance at who issued it) - dont care after that cos i'm insured for fraud on my cc.

    9. I would gather as much info as i possibly could and investigate it myself as far as I could. If it was serious I would talk to the cops - at least to register the problem - dont know if they can do much.

That's a good point, you'd probably get a more representative response on after hours, I think it'd be technically against their rules though to post again there so you might want to pm one of the AH mods first though and ask them.

1: Heavy user. I agree with chalk. People in this forum will probably consider 10 hours a week very light use. I use a computer for my job, so that's 40 hours a week straight away. I also rack up heavy personal use playing games, surfing, etc. I'd say, on average, I spend around 50+ hours a week in front of a computer.

    2: good

3: I'm constantly connected to the internet. Though actively using it for surfing probably around 10 hours. I use the internet to connect to my PC in work the 2 days a week I work from home, so I'm constantly using the internet then (even when typing in word, or whatever).

    4: good

5: All mentioned. banking and bill payment are obviously done through banking websites. Purchases primarily of computer hardware, books, dvd's, that kind of thing. Though I have bought unusual items (like plant seeds) online too. Basically, if I can get it delivered, I do.

6:Yes, once, a long time ago. The site just looked pretty shoddy and didn't have a https site.

7: https at a minimum. If I was concerned about the site I'd run a google check. Message boards around the world will badmouth any dodgy sites pretty quickly.

8: Nope. Unless you consider spam a crime. I know I do, but I don't think it's what you're looking for.

9: Depends on the nature of the crime. If it were identity theft, then probably the gardaí. Credit card information: Gardaí and the bank in question. I would also post warnings on message boards (like this one).

    10: Best of luck. :)

Purchasing any computer components, no way online banking even with the new 256bit SSL (really makes you wonder about 128bit SSL)
    P = NP hmmm.

    6. If purchasing something on the net, have you ever become suspicious about the site you wish to purchase off. If so, please give examples of what you saw.
Most CD selling sites, can't recall URLs just shoot around until I find someone whos used one thats worked and use that one.

    7. Is there anything in particular that you would look for before making any transactions online?
SSL, along with going with a site I've seen someone else use without problems

    8. Have you ever been victim of any form of online crime, such as fraud, mail threats, information theft, intrusion, phishing, viruses etc? If so, indicate what it consisted of.
Few mail threats (death threat in one case) from being an admin\mod. Few virus' sent down the line via the same, general spam and virus'... I run anti-virus, 3 firewalls (+router) and reformat regularly.

    9. If you were ever the victim of computer related crime, what would you do or whom would you turn to?
Depends what it is, threats get forwarded to ISPs, if I got hit by a dodgy site well, thats what credit card protection is for

Viruses, removed them via scanner/patch etc.
