    Hi,
my friend somehow managed to crack her laptop screen. It's still under warranty but "dropage" isn't covered so Harvey Norman said it will cost €700 to fix. This is madness I think so I'm just trying to help and see if you guys have any sollutions or know of any rights or legalities for this. The laptop cost about 2k in January but €700 just seems ridiculous

    Any help appreciated

That price is fairly average. They are right, warranties generally do not cover accidental damage.

Can anything be done like get a new case and just put all the components into it? Anything besides paying €700?

If it was dropped at home, check the home insurance policy if one exists?

Can't say much but you probably could just claim of your house insurance.

But would the premium then increase and she would end up spending more than €700 on it do you think?

NiceGuyEddy, I haven't got that information off her yet but I'll try get it soon! What exactly do you have in mind?

Screen is by far the most expensive bit. If it's more than a year old you might buy a replacement laptop on eBay for less. If you are very lucky you might find someone with a good screen but some damage to the rest.

Have you used an external monitor to verify it's ok.

A cheap 15" LCD monitor might be an option if the laptop is only used around the house.

As for somehow cracking it - closing the lid on something like a pencil is fairly common - so putting something heavy on it. If only people treated laptops like they would a glass ornament of similar value.

I don't actually know what happened it, neither does my friend. She suspects her sister

That seems like quite a problem so, Harvey Norman have the laptop at the moment I think so I don't think she has tested it. I'm pretty sure she just gave it back to them with a software problem and this is a new thing, whether they did or what, I don't know.

I'll try get more info anyway, thanks for the suggestions! The flat panel LCD might be an idea.

if its still under warranty why not be "genorous" with the truth.

In fairness, actual breakage on a laptop is very difficult to put down to anything other than accidental damage. Missing keys, a loose case, maybe, but cracked screen? I doubt it.

I don't even know what happened it and neither does my friend... maybe it was Harvey??? What would be the case then?

make her sister pay - But if it got dropped unless she purchased accidental breakage warranty she is on her own.

Most manufactures won't cover it why should they it isn't there fault somebody dropped it, regardless how much she paid for it or who dropped it.

Try to claim it off the house insurance if possible...

House insurance wont go up if she decides to claim though house insurance.I once dropped my pc while in moving stuff around.A person from insurance came out because it was over the €1000 mark I was claiming for.She took it away and i got a check couple weeks later.

Just make sure you have all recepits etc.

Forgot to say she might want to check her house insurance policy first.

you could always buy a replacment screen from tdcomponents.com
    and replaceit yourself
    I bought a refurbished one for €130 (i think)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

So she would have to trade it for money basically? As in the cost of the laptop on the receipt, she just couldn't get €700 off them for the screen no?

Is it a complicated procedure to replace the screen if she bought a new one?

I'll talk to her about it anyway, I take it if she was to replace the screen herself she would void her warranty?

    Thanks for all the help.

propobly but the warrenty dosent cover the cracked screen
and the laptop is not worth spending €700 on

It would probably be cheaper to get a really cheap laptop - rip off the screen and stick it on the other laptop.

If accidental damage is included on the house insurance, definitely claim off of that. This is exactly the sort of thing that you pay it for. You don't get a no claims bonus on house insurance like you do with car insurance, so the premium shouldn't go up.

Nah i gave it too some bloke from B&S called Gary Glitter! Actually i did take HD out to try and transfer stuff over but forgot to put it back in and actually affected what i got in long run.

Try to source the part on Ebay.. A 17 inch Sony Laptop panel can be go for as low as 400 euro now.. Sony (really Sharp) are probably the best and most expensive laptop screen out..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,879 ✭✭✭heggie

lol, yeh but u cant just fit any old laptop screen to your particular laptop, doesnt work like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

I know that, I gave the Sony screen as an example as Sony stuff tend to be the most expensive.. Find the approptiate part number and do a search on ebay..

It is relatively easy to fit an LCD penal too..

Cormac, I assume ur kev's mate! From Bray... too much of a co-incidence if your not. If its a DELL system i can do it for cheap.

Can't be a DELL if it's from Harvey Normans.

House insurance claim and new laptop time . It's what most other people do when this happens.
