Does anyone know if it is possible to get the 8% sales tax paid on purchases refunded when you leave the states. Has anyone done this, and if how do you go about it?

Sadly it's not possible to claim it back, even though we happily let them do it here

and if you tried to claim it back they'd know how much you spent and make you pay tax on it in ireland. some silly customs rule that dates back to the year splat that says you cant bring over €200 (or some equally silly, low number) worth of goods back into the country. thats why when i go to america i pull all the tags off stuff when i buy it and wear it over there, then there's no proof that i didnt buy it here/get it as a present!

While that rule may technically still be in place they never stop anyone for personal shopping (tags or not!). I know a few of the lads down there and they haven't bothered with that for years.

Now if they found 50 ipod shuffles in your bag that would be another matter! :D

i do it just to be sure though, and i like wearing new clothes (plus i kinda have to wear new clothes, i tend to just bring one outfit so i have space in my bag for new purchases!)
