I have 4.21 Gig Hard Drive Free Space and as a total computer novice I was looking to get more hard drive as I want to try my hand at video editing and was going to get an external hard drive as on sale here at lidl.. Would I then be able to add a dvd writer to this new hard drive ?

    Thanks

Assuming your PC has 2 IDE slows you can have 4 DVD/HD Drives in any config you want.

Edit what is total size of your present HD?

External drives usually use USB 2.0 or firewire to be any way fast so if your PC has a 4gb HD i would imagine it doesnt have USB 2.0 or a firewire card in it.

Lidl doing the 250 or 200Gb internal drive will be slightly faster than an external.

May be cheaper to buy a 40Gb from the for sale board here , again as your pc has a 4gb drive i would imagine its old no point spending massive amounts of money on it as the external HD would probably be worth more than the PC :D

Good god don't get an external HD if it'll be used for that :D

Get a nice big 200gig drive such as This one and move all of your main files over to it asap.

You'll have MUCH better performance with an internal drive than you will from an external one.
**Note that I'm not one for picking out superb hard drives, I just get ones that'll do the job :)

    550 megahertz Intel Pentium III
    32 kilobyte primary memory cache
    512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
20.52 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
4.21 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

    IDE-CD R/RW 4x4x24 [CD-ROM drive]
    TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1402 [CD-ROM drive]
VOBID InstantDrive CD SCSI CdRom Device [CD-ROM drive]
3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]

    WDC WD205BA [Hard drive] (20.53 GB) -- drive 0, s/n WD-WM9490107548, rev 16.13M16, SMART Status: Healthy
    MS 2000

This is summary of what I have on my system, it is about 5 years old and used mainly for wordprocessing, email, surfing and lately downloading large Liverpool FC vids which is filling upharddrive :o

I seem to have 4 slots: A drive (which i never use), cd r/w, cdrom drive and one empty. If I get an Internal Hard Drive, surely I won't be able to then get a dvd writer ? Does one just open up casing and plug in new internal drive ?

that computer is way too slow for video editing, it would even have a hard time play xvid movies. you should buy a new pc

He's right about the speed of your pc - but instead of buying an entirely new kit, you could look at some upgrades, such as those on Komplett - or have a look at the for sale section and try to piece together a better system

*edit* I'm talking about CPU/RAM/Motherboard/Possibly Gfx upgrade, not just a new hard drive :p

Can you recommend the cheapest way of buying new PC ? As I have garphics card, monitor, keyboard, software etc, what is basic minimum I would need to buy ? I really don't have much of a clue ! Also could anyone recommend a burner, no idea of difference between + and minuses etc. I would be using for home made dvds and compilations ~ no interest in downloading.

Choose your price range , you will be adding a GFX card and possibly a new power supply.

Maybe even a case if yours amicro or somfin.
