Hardly a new thing, for example many of the Canterbury Tales by Chaucer tell of cukolded husbands and that was written in the 14th century.

I'm not sure about the modern use of the word, but I would find it hard to believe that it is a choice made by husbands.

In the traditional sense it was more a case of elderly men with young wives turning a blind eye or being completely clueless. It certainly wasnt something they got off on.

See The Merchants Tale for example.
