    Cycling & Health

    * On a bicycle you can have your cake and eat it. A moderate half-hour each way commute will burn the equivalent of 11kg of fat in a year (www.getcycling.info)
    * Riding a bicycle you use less energy than a car uses to power its headlights (www.getcycling.info)
    * A car driver taking the same route as a cyclist in an urban environment breathes in nearly three times the amount of pollutants that the cyclist does (van Wijnen et al,1995)

    General Cycling Facts

    * In 2000 a total of 101 million bicycles were manufactured worldwide, but only 41 million cars were produced. (www.earth-policy.org)

    Record Breakers

    * The tallest rideable bicycle measures 4.34m from the ground to the handlebars. The bicycle had no stabilsers!
    * The highest speed ever achieved on a bicycle is 167.043mph by Fred Rompelberg from the Netherlands. (His record attempt was greatly assisted by the slip stream of his lead vehicle)
    * The longest bicycle ever built without a third stabilising wheel measures 25.88m in length.(40 club members of the Super Tandem Club in Ceparana in Italy cycled 112m on 20 September 1998)
    * The largest bicycle ever constructed known as the “Frankencycle” measured 3.4m in height and had a wheel diameter of 3.05m
    * The earliest recorded bicycle ever constructed with cranks and wheels was built in 1839 – 1840 in Dumfries, Scotland by Kirkpatrick Macmillan
    * Javier Zapata from Columbia holds the world record for climbing the most stairs by bicycle. He climbed the 1200 steps of the Parque Centre Tower in Caracus in 1 hour 5 minutes!
    * The longest bicycle wheelie journey ever recorded is 2839.6 miles. (Kurt Osburn “wheelied” from Hollywood to Orlando between April 13 and June 25 1999.)
    * The fastest recorded speed for cycling on snow is 132mph. (Christiam Taillefer of France in March 1998)
