Women Players

    Hi guys,

Was just wondering, do you encounter many women players when you play in tournaments (not online obviously).

I ask because I went to the Paddy Power Irish Open and entered the €100 rebuy, and I was one of only a handful of women there. I think there was about 150 entrants and I only saw 2 other women there(may have been more)......is there that many more men who play the game, or is it just women are less likely to go to games like this?

I went to a little tournament in Waterford with 60 entrants, and there was only 2 women there - we both got to the final table btw - I came third :D but anyway.....

I know there must be more men that play than women, but surely not as much as 30/1 or 50/1?

Also, and this is not meant to be offensive - but would you find it easier to intimidate a woman at the table? In the Waterford tournament, even though I felt I was playing well and making a decent account of myself, the guys kept insisting on telling me when to put in the blinds, when it was my turn to act etc, as if I didn't know.

Maybe intimidate is the wrong word........I wasn't sure if they were deliberately trying to wind me up or if they thought I didn't have a clue because I was female......would you be the same or would you treat every player the same way?

Well that post was longer than I intended...........sorry!! Any thoughts?

btw, I went out of the paddy power one after about 3 hours (no rebuy) when I called an all in preflop with KK, and the other lad turned over AA :( Lost most of the stack and it was downhill from there!

There's a regular contingent of 'more mature' women playing in the Dublin casino tournaments, and most of them play at the same standard as, or better than, the guys. Probably the most famous is Collete Doherty, who destroys all players anyway, male or female. Jenny Heniggan (Hannigan?) is another top-class tournament player; she was high up in the European money listings last year. Then there's Irene, Marie, Chris, etc, etc.

There aren't as many younger women playing yet, but there seems to have been a steady increase in the last year or so. In the tournaments I'd say the ratio is about 10/1 or so.

Regarding intimidation, most people wouldn't bother against any of the people above, 'cos it wouldn't work (And if you're at the same table as Collete she'd be the one ripping you to shreds anyway!). I've never seen anyone trying to intimidate the newer women players... generally anyone who does is a juan kerr anyway (to rob BigDragons phrase smile.gif).

I've seen Chris Green rip a table up like there was no tomorrow in the Gutshot last time the Fitz was over there... Some of the young lads were kinda sniggering to themselves when she took out her handbag to reload in the cash game. She wasnt too impressed (neither was I, they were little punks). So, half an hour later they are all broke and she had about 700 in front of her. I couldnt stop laughing as she put on her "I'm just a little old granny" act... she even said that very sentence during a hand (which I immediately folded!).

I dont play much differently against female players, I'm maybe a little more wary of them as from my experience they are more likely to be tight passive players and generally bluff less then their male counterparts. Generally!
But to be honest it doesnt vary my play a great deal. My 2c

ps: one thing that DOES annoy me is the suggestion of "Ladies Only" games and "Womens Prize" for the last female in the tournie. Utter sexism imho. Its not like theres heavy lifting involved.

I also played in the Paddy Power €100 game meepmeep and i remember there were alot more than 2 women, I would have thought there was around 10-15 women. A husband and wife made the final table that night, and 1 or 2 others were in the final 20-30.
But it is happening that more women are playing regularly and playing better than men. I think the statistic online anyway is that 40% of all players are women, not sure could be wrong.

EDIT!! Sorry I read it wrong different game i played in!!

I can never bluff women. I don't even bother trying anymore. There's a French woman called Natallie (I think) I've played against in The Merrion a few times and she ALWAYS holds the nuts.
