Right firstly i have only being watching it on RTE so i haven't seen ahead or even as many episodes as most people but from the very first episode i had an inkling about the "Monsters" and maybe i'm completely wrong but:

Has anyone seen the movie "Forbidden Planet" ? Think of the noises coming from the forest and the noises from the movie.

As regards Forbidden Planet. this was a Science fiction classic where they introduced Robbie the Robot who later became parked in "warning Warning2 Lost in Space
anyway it was the same plot idea as shakespeares play The Tempest.

    here is the kicker:
The monsters in Forbidden planet were "monsters from the ID". Now the cripple/hunter character points to the idea that the island is affecting everyone. He believes this from personal experience since he can walk. I believe more is to be developed on this theme. I also believe that it will take maybe up to episone eight to introduce and fill out all the charachters.

The central ones at teh moment seem to be the doctor, the criminal/nurse and the hunter bt

the criminal black marketeer with redeeming features, he shoots the agent; was it to help him die or to shut up his annoying screams?; he says to the water thief that it sucks to be the most hated. I think his charachter will develop as the trader an amoral individualist marketeer who is pragmatic. I would think the type of situation he will come to the fore in is one where the group has to chose to leave an injured party and move on say eg. to flee the monster when the doctor Jack might take a "strong as our weakest link" strategy. also in the mix with htis "US economic model" are the "Hollywood"
glamour couple. Will their self image stand above self denial and self effacement in the face of the worst aspects of individualism?

he terrorist?/political theorist and the black guy with the kidand dog seem to be developing. the Korean couple also add intrigue. I think maybe their cultural moteif is being tested and while the husband shows some "unacceptable" attitudes (by western norms ) these are balanced e.g. she is doing the work and he tells her to clean herself up. Is this because he thinks he should tell her how to look or because he wants her to have a better self image?; she thanks him for getting her water ( which he caught a fish for and traded) His reply is "that is my job as a husband" has he as sence of duty to his wife or is he just a cold person? etc. the wife does not seem to have done anything bad.

All in all the whole think is set up to play each one off against the other and maintain a sense of mystery while having redeaming features for the bad guys and horrible aspects to the good guys. Isnt that drams at its best?
