A friend is travelling to Albuquerque at the start of July for a week's conference and then a weeks holiday. Has anyone travelled around New Mexico before, and have any tips to offer for that region?

To be honest the city of Albuquerque is a bit of a dump, all wide straight streets with noting but shopping center, housing complex, business park, shopping center, housing complex, business park, going on for miles and miles.
The old town is OK, but Central Ave (part of old Rt 66) is a complete dump.

No real night life either as everything is spread out (you might get some down near the university)

However the landscape around Albuquerque and in New Mexico in general is fabulous. The Sandia Mountains overlooking the city are spectacular; you can get the cable car or drive up to the top.

A few hours away is Santa Fe, the highest Capital City in the US, it has a real old Mexican town center, the rattlesnake museum is interesting.

Los Alamos the place where the a-bomb was developed is a also a few hours away, great scenic drive up to it
White Sands National Park and Alamogordo are supposed to be very interesting as is Accoma one of the oldest settlements in the world.
And you can always try Roswell if you are into UFOs

Overall your buddy should get a car (they'll need it for traveling around Albuquerque anyway) and spend their weeks holiday traveling around New Mexico and the area, Grand Canyon and four coroners (where Arz, NM, Col and UT meet) are also in that general region.

Oh and by the way, expect to roast outdoors in July!!!!
