I know there have been threads before, but I have a specific requirement......

I have an XTrac Pro HS. It has served me well, but it's at the point now where even constant cleaning wont stop the mouse from jerking a bit when moving from stop to start.

I'll be using the mouse for gaming. Specifically Unreal Tournament 2004 (the sig gives it away a bit ;)). That requires very smooth movement. A rough surface is fine once movement by (say) one pixel from a stop position is possible.

Also, the larger the better tbh. I absolutely HATE running out of mouse pad space while you're in the middle of a row.

I await your recommendations and thank you in advance.

Why not just get another XTrac Pro HS? ;)

I don't use a mat at all anymore - the MX510 works great on my desk.

Cheap allsop cloth pads (those ones with the raindrop patterns on them) are great. Works a charm with my ms explorer 3.0 (my desk's surface doesn't seem to be very suitable for optical mice).

if you can find one of the sun microsystems mats, they rock

I use a sheet of paper stuck to my desk.
Would get a mouse mat if they make a difference just wouldnt have a clue what to look out for.

lols. I have one of those in work that I could yoink. You mean the thick ones that are covered in cloth?

It's probably a bit small for gaming though.

I have an icemat2 + mx510 , its very very smooth if you get some padsurfers for the mouse, but I do have to give it a wipe everytime i use it cause dust makes it make a scratchy noise. It nice an big aswell.

€42 squids in maplin, but you'll have to get teflon padsurfers online/elsewhere.
I like it alright as long as it stays quiet!!
im fairly sure that there are better cheaper mats out there!

yeah i can second the icemat, im using an icemat atm but im going to get the steelpad pretty soon, both have a nice large area, but the steelpad offers a bit more resistance on the surface, of course both will let you make pixel perfect movements

At the moment I'm using the func1030 I love it as it's got a rough and a smooth side, it also has a mouse clip so your mouse cable hanging over your desk doesn't create drag.

Only downside to the func is it's size it's by far not the smallest but it ain't a giant either.

If you need a big pad I'd suggest the steelpad S&S. they are great as I have one myself too but it takes up too much space on my desk.

Icemats (which I have had the pleasure of using) are okay, they are good for summer months as they keep your hand cold, but I think that's the only thing they are good for. The mouse scrapes across the icemat - as it is glass - and creates a fingernail on blackboard type noise (ie. not pleasant).

I'm sure you know where to find the UIE site :)

I see on komplett they have a wrist support to which i might get but 33 euro for a mouse map is a lot not sure if its even worth it.
How do they compare to using as sheet of paper :D

Have you tried using Skatez ?
I have those and a DKT Gaming Mat, works an absolute treat for gaming.
Even on a bog standard mouse mat those skatez make a big improvment for very little cost.

It's very cheap on ebay these days if you fancy saving a few squids. I was looking for a copy of UT99 recently and saw that UT2K4 prices are reasonably low.

On the pasting front....well.....only for a while. The unreal.ie heads are very helpful and will get you up to scratch quickly.

Kinkstr: I have something similar to that. Got it free with the mouse pad. Just put new ones on the mouse feet there the other week.

Sounds like the steelpad could be the way to go. I'll check out all the links though.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    Who needs mats anymore?

Not with the newer mouse types anyway. :D

well a lot of people still prefer mats and i am one of them.

    the reason for this is

I love a nice frictionless surface to slide a mouse on which you just don't get with your run of the mill desk.

    What mice do you mean?

Personally i couldnt use a desk surface, you might get away with it for normal windows/internet useage, but for gaming you need to have a mat.

that would have been me then, with my slick icemat sales technique......
I like it though, except when its dirty & then scrapey noises happen

Just dragging this one back up 'cos I only got my new mat yesterday. I ended up going with this one. Couldn't be happer tbh. Lovely smooth action. Surface is rough (ish) to touch, but single pixel movement is easy peasy.

I'm using a Razer Diamondback and eXactmat combo...very very nice! Love the two sides on the mat, one for work and one for play! :)
