Get a 2.5 to 3.5 HDD convertor.Ghost your HDD onto a PC check free essential software in the computer section for ghosing material.

Not sure what type of HDD that lappie has though.

thanks. Has an IBM Travelstar 30GB ATA 4200rpm

Do I need to get the same spec drive or can I get say 40gb drive? I've seen a 40gb hitachi on expansys.ie?

Check the spec of your machine from the manufacturer website to see compatablie HDD's ;majority are ok, but check. Even a quick e-mail for piece of mind.

When adding a hdd to a laptop, issues tend to be increased battery drain, heat, noise, but most importantly hdd height. 9mm to 13mm.

With Dell 8x00's there's room for the 13mm so you should be fine.

The Hitachi drive, can't tell whether it's a 4200RPM drive or not.
    could be
    Travelstar E7K60 40GB UDMA100 8MB cache 7200rpm £64.68 inc VAT
    or
    Travelstar 4K40 40GB UDMA100 4200rpm stg £40.39 inc VAT

prices from dabs.co.uk (just because they've a decent selection)

If you want a quicker drive at the expense of cost, noise, some battery life you might prefer the version with the higher rpm value.

    Decent compomise would be
    Seagate Momentus 40GB UDMA100 5400rpm 8MB stg £47.29 inc VAT
