I'm going to be off this week due to sickness and I just got an email from my boss telling me that they won't be paying me for the 4 day's I'm off. Does anyone know where I stand on this and I was also told I have to claim from the social welfare ??? What sort of money can I expect from them ?

You will have to get an illness claim form from the social welfare and claim, I think it's about €150 per week, so for 4 days it will be slightly less.

Your job does not have to pay you for illness unless it is specified in your contract.

This is an email that we got from our HR dept about this a while ago:
Just to let you know as and from April 1st 2001 everybody who is out sick for more than 3 days is obliged to claim Disability Benefit from the Department of Social, Community and Family affairs. www.welfare.ie
The company will deduct the amount your are entitled to claim form your net monthly salary and the cheque you receive from the Department of Social, community and family affairs can be lodged direct to your own account.
If you need to claim disability Benefit you can get the appropriate forms from your doctor who will in turn sign it for you.
If for any reason your are refused Disability benefit, the company will refund you any monies deducted from your salary.

Welfare won't pay the first 3 days of a claim,so all you'll get is 1 days money.

    No, you'll get full pay.

The point is that after 3 days, you're eligable for compensation from the government, that's when your employer stops paying. So it's up to you to claim it.
For the first 3 days, you get paid in full, depending on your contract of course.

For the first three days, you're not entitled to squat from anyone. Your employer is not bound to pay you for sick leave, and the Government will not compensate you.

Odd. I've never been in a job where they didn't pay you for the first 3 days, unless you're been payed by the hour.

As you say, it's a contractual thing. Most employers do have it in as a standard contract agreement, but they're by no means obliged to.

    Ah I see,
they all do it, so I assumed it was standard.
