Hard drive recorder ??

    I want a hard drive recorder and am here in the states at the moment but they mostly have a paid service to them ie - Tivo similar to sky+ - a ripoff in my book.

    Has anyone ever built one - found this site - http://www.byopvr.com/

    just wanted to know the cost -- is it purely a hard drive with a basic pc box and appropriate software ??
    just want to get away from VHS and would like a PVR instead of a dvd recorder.
