The details are 250GB 7200rpm HD plus casing for 139 euro. The make is Targa. Is it a good deal ? Is Targa a good make?

Am hoping to get this myself Monday morning!

Wasn't too busy in the Sligo branch last time they had all the computing stuff in.. hopefully, it may be the same this time round!

I need it... only got 13GB (and quickly dropping) free on my laptop! :D

PS - it's the same external hard drive that was in a month or two back. Think i can recall some people having trouble installing it. Any opinions on it from people who bought it?

    I bought it
Make sure you have a USB 2.0 port otherwises it's way too slow.
Mine is giving me an intermittent 'delayed write failed error' maybe it's the pci card i got for the usb 2. Great value at € 139 i thought it was good at €189 when i bought it.
Oh yeah it doesn't like windows ME - no problem with XP though.

    It's probably a Western Digital WD2500JB drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭dougal

Is it USB 2.0 only or does it have firewire connection too?

    USB 2.0 only (1.1 compatible).

I got the 250 GB internal HD the last time they were on offer, no complaints, great value

I bought a couple of HD enclosures from www.gridelectronics.co.uk for £14 each. Useful if you have an old IDE drive about already.

People should beware that the USB external drive support in pre-windows XP is dodgy to say the least. You will inevitably get a lot of delayed-write errors writing to the external drive. No solutions so far except go to XP.

Yeah.. was suprised at how few external drives they had in the Sligo branch this morning. Was No. 9 in the queue... not many knew bout the new opening hours, i'm guessing!

Could have got a ticket for the laptop if i wanted but didn't want it. Got my hard drive and that was all i wanted!

Excellent value at €139 though.. considering they were €199 last time they were in (according to the newsletter anyways).

I was at Moore St also.

There was a new opening time of 8 :(

They were all swiped, within about 60 seconds of opening!!! I got one, one guy grabbed 3, that seems a bit unfair.

They were actually more popular then the laptops. There was still one laptop left at opening time. To be honest the laptop wasn't really all that great value. They didn't have many of the External HDD, this seems silly to me, surely if the demand is there, then they should fill it.

hahah they are tempting you by reducing the quantity i believe
once they have finished skimming then they will flood the market

coz the person who bought 3 will not buy 3 if there were 50 pieces of the product present there :) hope it makes sense

:) its called marketing man :)

does anyone know if they work fine with an apple laptop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 244 ✭✭scribs

Bought the laptop and the external hardrive today was there at 8.00.
There was only 8 external hardrives and they were piccked up very quickly. One guy who sounded Russian was roaring at the top of his voice "I was first inthe Q" - Where is my external harddrive" - it was hillarious.

The staff didnt know what to do.

You can disable write caching, properly disconnecting using the icon in the system tray should work too.

I stolled over to Moore Street at 8am (thought it was 9am until I checked the flyer!) and there must have been 40 people in the Q.
I went over for the printer ink cartridges, a bargain at 4.99, Epsom or Canon.
Once the H/D's were gone, most of the people disappeared.

No, it is called being dumb, there was about 40 people in the line, I'd say most were looking for the External HDD, yet they only had 8. Most people left disgusted, and some will probably never return to Lidl again, it certainly isn't a fun experience.

If they are good value then people will buy them anyway, weither they have 8 or 50. I believe in Germany, Lidl and Aldi have stocks of cumputers available to buy for a couple of weeks after they are launched. I think the whole Lidl, Aldi thing is starting to wear off, there seems to be far less excitement about their laptops and computers now that Dunnes and Dell and Tesco are doing similiar, but in a much more convenient manner.

Does anyone know if they still have some laptops in stock?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

I doubt it, tbh. They tend to sell out when they open.

well i tell you loadz of companys do that
vodafones 6630 deal is an example of that they sold the same phone when it was launched for 300 euros may b more and some people got it on a 99 euro per month and now its 199 with 80 credit on pay as u go
o2 did the same with nokia 6610i keep your eyes open and see the marketing aspect of it
i usderstand from a customers point of view it sounds stupid but
i tell you it works for sellers :)
i undrstand ur point coz i wanted one hard drive me self

I understand that, but Lidl don't actually do that. They don't come back and swamp the market with more expensive ones later, in my experience they'll come back in 3 - 6 months with either a cheaper price or larger HDD size and have the same pathetic numbers. Lidl just sell stuff cheap, they don't go in over the whole loss leader/promotion thing like other companies, they are actually making money on these.

I'm not saying that they should have hundreds, just enough to satisfy demand over a 2 or 3 day period. This is what they generally do in Germany, you can generally get the specials over a period of about a week. I think we are just getting screwed here in Ireland as normal.

Well I woke up at 9am, and strolled into Lidl around 10.30 expecting to buy an external hard drive. I'm so naive...

    LOL.

    Q
Why spend 1499.00 on a laptop in Lidl when you could get one for 699 in Dunnes (ok the spec ain't the same but is it worth the extra 800 yoyo's?)

Having had the opportunity to play around with one of the Lidl laptops that a friend bought yesterday, I would say yes absolutely.
