Ok here are the inputs on the front of my telly.. along with a few scarts at the back.
What would be the best way to connect my laptop to the telly, so I can use the telly as a big monitor?
Port at the back of my lappy is S-video..

If you must, use the svideo "S-V" input on your TV.
You are not going to be able to play games on your TV (like Half-life, or most things 3D) and the TV Res is soo much lower, you sould expect to work in either 640x480 or 800x600 if you want to be able to read anthing on screen.

There is not really any other way around it unless you invest in a nice new HD-LCD screen!!

Let us know how you get on.

S-video to S-video I guess would be the best.
as you don't really have any other choice...
    (or am I missing something?)

So that would just be svideo to svideo yeah?

Would I be able to watch DVD's?

Any movie's or videos will appear just fine.
But desktop's and small writing will be unreadable.

Do not think this will be useable as a monitor..

watching DVD's shouldn't be a problem, but the Aspect may be off and the pic won't be as clear as from a DVDplayer... you want to splash out on a dvd player... you can get them for like 30euro now... i've seen them in boots for that!!

Or you could try this. I've ordered off these guys before (got an s-video to SCART cable), very prompt delivery.

actually, is it possible to get the sound tho or will that have to come thru the laptop speakers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭snappieT

No, you'd need an earphone jack to RCA (The red and white connectors on the front of the TV) to get sound also, á la http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=32064&doy=7m6

Though I'm sure there is an S-Video & 3.5mm headphone jack to scart cable somewhere...

i have a scart to svideo and audio cable but i'm not sure they exist the other way round

The same cable should work. When have you ever seen a diode inside a scart lead!?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but s-video is the best quality option you have. You don't want to downgrade it to composite with that adaptor. (I know because my telly is not s-video capable, so I am stuck with composite)

As others have said, you want an s-video cable for video, along with an earphone jack to RCA cable for audio. (If you have a stereo with a line-in, you could use the audio cable to connect to that and get better sound than either the laptop or the TV, as I do).

    Enjoy.

Yeah, best quality is obviously what I'm looking for, so is it S-video to S-video or S-video to RCA?

Could just plug in speakers to my laptop for decent sound, no?

Dawballz, looking at that pic of your tv front I reckon I have the same (or near enough to it) telly as you. I use the tv's S-video input to watch DivX stuff from my pc, and it is perfectly ok for this, but like the lads said don't think that you can use the TV for general pc work like netsurfing because text will be too fuzzy (for want of a better word). You will probably have to do a bit of fiddling with the drivers of your laptop's graphics to get it to use a second display, this will depend on the make of the graphics chipset so not knowing what it is, I can't be more specific sorry. On the tv side of things I recommend that you set Aspect to Panasonic Auto (just keep pressing the 'Aspect' button till this appears) and the tv will decide itself what is the best display mode for the situation. Also I find that when you are are in AV mode (scarts and s-video/composite signals as opposed to tuner mode) you may have to press AV3 (yellow button) more than once to get it to switch to the S-video signal AV3S will display for a few seconds in a small blue box at the top left of the screen when you are on the right option.
Also yes speakers connected to the sound out of the laptop is the easiest way. Good luck with it.

You want S-video to S-video (S-video to RCA would involve downgrading the signal from s-video to composite).

You can plug in speakers to your laptop but they need to be powered speakers (like all PC speakers) or else use a hifi with a line-in to the amplifier.

This thread is me grappling with this problem and beating it. :)

Iv already recommended 1 of these to sum1 else but u could also use 1. They are very nifty and and it means u can have all the cables running behind your tv as it plugs into scart and s-video.

    http://www.trust.com/products/product.aspx?artnr=14135

It is very easy to set up and has no software, just plug and watch your pc on your tv :)
