Sorry if this seems stupid but are there katas to learn in kickboxing and what order do you get your belts? Seems like gradings are every 6 months, is it reasonable to expect to progress with each grading?

The answer can vary widely depending on what club/organisation you belong to and by what you mean by "Kickboxing" (this is a bone of contention with me currently!).

As I said in other posts on here, originally kickboxing was usually of full contact in nature, with tough training and heavy sparring. sometimes it was continous semi contact but these bouts (in my experience) usually went the full contact route anyway!

Now people call this tag sports point fighting kickboxing. Now I am not knocking this, but back in the year dot, that was called Sport Karate (a USA term) (and kickboxing was called Full Contact Karate).
Personally the points fight tag style is not kickboxing and some organistations call this kickboxing. (which I do not agree with).

Google Beeny Uriquedez at the Jet Centre in USA to get an idea of kickboxing.

If there is Kata , it sounds to me (though I may not be totally right) like you are in a club of the sports karate variety.

some kickboxing orgs have belts and some do not. I have a 4th degree belt in Mu Gen Do kickboxing. However these days I am not into belts nor gradings...just believe in doing what works well!

any versions of kickboxing I did, did not have Kata, but had lots of good ol heavy sparring, which to me it was all about.

Its up to you, and your goals and interests to do what version you like best.
and what I have said is just my own personal view points.

    Train hard ok!

I only just started and I know for sure there is a belt/grading system and no one has mentioned katas. I was just curious.

All the better, katas are pointless anyways.

I am training in Roy Bakers school in Leixlip. I just found some info on the gradings and belt order.

white belt first tip(8th kyu), white belt second tip (7th kyu), green belt (6th kyu), green belt first tip (5th kyu), green belt second tip (4th kyu), brown belt (3rd kyu), brown belt first tip( 2nd kyu) and brown belt second tip (1st kyu)

    thanks!

He was a top World Champion. a seriously fit chap and a nice bloke too.

    Bushido right?

Very well run organisation. lots of champions from there.

Personally would not be what I am into to based on my own training gols.

however if your starting , its a excellent place to begin in i'd imagine,

    Train hard , and enjoy!!
