Just coming home last night I noticed this big insect on the back of a car.

Photo isn't great, but take a look.

He was moving his legs around, but I don't think he was in the best shape tbh.

It's hard enough to get an idea of scale here, but I can tell you, he is over an inch long.. maybe 1.5".

    Looks like a cockroach.

Have more photos but they're crap too, and I'm on dial-up so I will post them later.

Looks like a baby cockroach? Where do you live. Morocco cause then its not so weird. And I just solved the mystery of the Carkroach!

    Probably a Cockchafer or 'Maybug'.
Biggish beetle (by Irish standards), but harmless.

I think I speak for everyone when I say I prefer Grimes' Morocan Carkroach Theory

    Jeezuz man...

Set your camera to micro mode, usually the flower symbol on the mode selection wheel.

Designed for close-ups like the one you've shown

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,061 ✭✭✭dawballz

Tis the GF's camera and I don't know much about it.. Must read the manual some time.

Looks like the CockChafer anyway. Never saw one of those before. Scary.

    It's macro mode, not micro.

Fraid not cathy if you check your manual i think you'll find the desired mode is referred to as mucro-mode.
Don't worry bout it tho, simple mistake to make

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭Cathy

Are you sure it's not mocro?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

Nah the mocro is only used if the fibulator of the main chassis has burnt out due to over exposure
But once again Cathy don't beat yourself up over it as it really is an easy mistake to make.

Right, well thanks a million for correcting me there, I looked up my manuals and they've spelt it wrong too, and also on my cameras, so I'll be writing some strongly-worded letters of complaint!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

Bloody manuals, not worth the paper they're printed on
Good news is i'm about to launch an imformative and sexy website called ASK PIGHEAD so in future if you have any querys regarding anything at all don't be afraid to ASK PIGHEAD
eh just to save me getting banned for off-topicness may i say isn't that bug thingy very un-sexy
