DVDShrink is good. If you get good @ it, a 2 pass with DivX is also pretty good.

?? dvdshrink converts dvds down to fit on single layer dvdrs
AutoGk is what the OP is looking for, as was already said, its fool proof and gives very good results.

If you want a step up from AutoGKnot, get the full version of GordianKnot. It gives access to some more advanced options which help for fine-tuning your rip. I wouldn't encode anything without it.

Just remember to run your spyware removal app of choice after you install GKnot. It does come bundled with something, but it still works fine after you remove the spyware. Tis an unfortunate step for GKnot. It was great up til they included spyware.

The latest xvid release is awesome '1.1.0-beta2'

I recently encoded 3 dvd's music videos . So I was lookin for very high quality.
I got near vob quality i.e 50-100 MB per minute at about 10-20 Mb /min
for movies of course you get even better results, I usually go for about a gig a movie, works pretty well.
one thing though , I find it better to change the quantizer to mpeg , works better than the default, gives a cleaner image.

High bitrate, high res, go for MPEG.

Low bitrate, lower res use the other one (whatever its called).
