office access conversion nightmare

I've just upgraded from office 97 with access to the 2003 version on the knowledge that 2003 can (supposedly) convert old 97 files to working 2003 versions. I ran a 9MB database file through the inbuilt 2003 converter and it spat out a 1.7MB file it claims to be a conversion, however when i try and open it access grinds to a halt and needs to be ended from the task manager. Acess is fully updated with service packs and jet 4 and the file works perfectly on 97 pre-conversion.

Has anyone had similar problems converting from 97 to 2003 in the past, i've poked through all the windows help and knowledge base files and had no luck at all.
