    after i turn my desktop on for a couple of minutes it begins 2 sound like an aeroplane taking off then it stops for a while and starts again, anyone any ideas?

    Just your fans, whats your setup, the reason they startup again is you temps rising as you use your PC.

    i know that but it happens when the machine is idle and it really loud i mean far too loud.

    trying to remember its a machine i dont use too often, from what i can remember p4 1.7 Ghz, 512 sdram, GeForce 2, sound blaster live, etc etc,

    Download a controller that sets up your fans to run more constant(mobo monitor 5 or summit;check stickies). Sounds like the mobo/case is heating and reaching the peak temp then ramping them to cool down again. Check the BIOS and see the fan alarm temps and all that.
