yet more proof that it's the same product with a different price / license.

Looks like not much has changed since the old hack to turn NT4 workstation into NT4 server - is this isn't a design policy then it gives cause for concern that other vulernabilities could also still be there a decade later.

I reckon the boot sector could also be resonsible for eval versions - on NT4 server it is the boot floppies that make it an eval version.
"There are of course things that are mere registry changes between versions, but there are many other things that are not. Even if you dress your cat up as a dog, you in fact will still have a cat."

But a cat that is functionally a dog may have some utility; we make no comment whatsoever as to the appropriateness of that image when used with reference to certain companies' operating systems.

As i understand if you use that hack, you cannot use Windows update and there are some problems wit SP2

Plus there are not a lot of benifits using the pro version on a home computer

Main reason for posting was to show that a hack that worked back in 1995 to circvumvent licensing still hasn't been sorted. Also that the code base is similar across the product range.

In fairness having a unified code base means that bugs only need to be fixed once instead of corporate servers getting top priority.

Also microsoft have been accused in the past of making thier software easy to pirate to kill off the competition or at least until Activation haven't really gone out of their way compared to many other vendors to limit copying. So the upgrade hack may not be as critical as it might sound. - still worrying though.
