Basically when i burn data onto a dvd then try to view it after it burnt i see
nothing at all. During the burn process it even verifys correctly. I use nero to
burn onto the dvd. I can watch movies and install games that are dvds but
when it comes to reading from a dvd that I wrote to, I just cant seem to be
    able to do it.

    Any ideas??

Are you using the correct DVD+R or DVD-R? I had this problem when I first started burning DVDs and it turned out I had bought the wrong format disk.

Nope im using the correct dvd version. Dvd+.

I can back back-ups of movies and they play in my dvd player on my TV and
    on my PC!

Its just when i seem to put data on the dvd like, mp3's, back-ups of games
and OS's etc, I seem not to be able to read from the disk.

What operating system are you using? Are you buring multi-session disks?

Funny that you mention that. IVe no idea what multi-session is so i always
    say burn without multisession.

    Im using Win XP pro

Multi-session means that it leaves the disk open so that you can always go back and add more it it afterwards.

Well, if you;re not burning multi-session it doesn't really matter, but for what its worth you have an OS that would support it.

    Ok.

the softare I use to back-up dvds is dvd shrink.

The softare I use for burning data onto dvds is Nero.

Do you think its the softare im using? Can you reccomend any free dvd
    software?

    A couple of questions
Have you tried to read your data DVDs in another PC/ Laptop, if so what are/ were the results?
    1. What brand/ model of DVD drive are you using

As for the software you mention - IMHO DVD shrink is the best available, & Nero is pretty good. Those are my two weapons of choice!

Had a similar issue about a year ago. Thought the burner was dead, then I did a firmware upgrade. And it was back in business.

To upgrade the firmware go to the manufacturers website and see if they have updates in their support download section.

    Or try here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php.
    Follow instructions carefully though.
