I was flicking through a list of Irish ISPs earlier on and noticed that Casey Cable Vision Ltd of Dungarvan Co. Waterford offer 9 mbit / sec downloads with 512k uploads all for 40 euro / month.

    http://www.cablesurf.com/

If that's viable in a town the size of Dungarvan, I really can't see why NTL/Chorus & co can't get their act together and roll out similar technology on the cable nets in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford City etc etc..

I also find it very ironic that Ennis Co. Clare was picked as Eircom's IT Town yet it never got anything remotely as fast as this.
