A reply in another thread reminded me to say this.

There are two types of drain-clearing agent on the market at the moment. One is alkaline and the other is acid. Whatever you do, never ever mix the two. Under no circumstances. It will cause a violent reaction which will injure you. To be safe, if you buy a particular brand, stick exclusively to that exact product until you've unblocked the sewer.

    Hi gregos,

A very good idea, a safety topic !

When using ladders always ensure the ladder is on stable ground and exceeds the gutter height by one metre.

Always have a second person to "foot" the ladder until it is tied off at the top, ensure the rubbers at the base of the ladder are in good especially if it is being erected on concrete or tar macadam.

Always use the 4:1 rule when positioning ladders.
The distance from the base of the ladder to the wall should be 4 times less (approx) than the distance from the top of the ladder against the wall to the ground.

Always use safety glasses when using a hedge strimmers no matter how small the grass you are trimming. YOU ONLY HAVE TWO EYES.!!!

Always de-nail all timber that is removed from shuttering ,or temporary timber or studwork. Do not leave it for someone else to do.

4 " nail injuries up through the foot ,will leave an everlasting reminder etched into your memory for years.

    Hi,

To expand on Kadmans post an 1 1/2" or 2" oval from architraves or similar can be an equally memorable experience.

Even if you didn't take the timber off, make it your business to bend over all nails.

Take care with masonary nails, always, Yes Always wear safety goggles, struck wrong pieces can fly.

Don't depend on your safety boots, they are your second line of defence, your first line is observation.

Keep the work area clean and everyone gets to stand back and look with satisfaction on the work done, regardless of how much or how little in a day.

Never operate any power tools, or machinery when there are children or animals nearby.

I was once using a sharpening block attached to t cordless drill to sharpen a shears, when my dog decided he didn't like the noise, so he jumped up and grabbed the spinning sharpening stone in his mouth!

Seems to be a lot of queries on asbestos at the moment, so here's some info on the current safety regs.

    Hi Fredser,

To expand a little on the saws and grinders, did you know that the disc in an angle grinder can only be changed by a person who has received proper training ?

For Self Builders with their own insurance.

Ensure that every person working on your project has a current Safe Pass Card or letter confirming they have sat and passed the test.

The above should not be necessary if you employ a builder, however make sure the builder has an up to date Health and Safety Statement.
