Oily fish

Was in the supermarket today, bought some irish salmon. There was another pack on salmon near it and said it was from Norway, Scotland or Chile!!!

Had to laugh!!! On a more serious note however, I wonder how "safe" this packaged salmon is and if it really does come from Ireland. Can anyone shed some light on this?

On the same note, what's your favourite oily fish?

Why do you have any doubts? If it's for sale in a reputable shop, from a reputable fish processor, you shouldn't have any problems.

One area of concern with farmed slamon is their lack of genetic diversity renders them more prone to disease, but they don't sell the diseased fish.

I think what esperanza is referring to is the chemicals that salmon farmers use to kill lice and give the salmon its colouring.
The chief ingredient in salmon colouring is called Canthaxathin which is extracted from flamingo feathers and has been linked with eye damage in large doses.
Most modern salmon farmers have well regimented husbandry techniques and use chemicals in recommended dosages although I have heard that the incidence of testicular cancer amongst west of Ireland salmon farm workers is much higher than the norm.
I recall a programme recently on RTE where they exposed questionable and illegal practices on a couple of salmon farms in the west.
AFAIR one of the people being investigated was a member of the board of the Marine Institute and still is!!
