    Hey there,

Was wondering about whether you ppl had an opinion on what art i should take up again. I done Kenpo for a few years in my youth [ i'm 24 ] and liked it alot, but was restless as you are when u are 12 so i stopped.

Now i'm interested in TaeKwon-Do as i like using leg power and movements with the feet , i believe i would stick with the TKD alright, as i said, what do u guys think ?

Might sound obvious, but the best way to find out is to just give it a go. Maybe try a couple of different clubs when you start off, to get different perspectives.

Definitely go for it. Twenty four is still young, and definitely not too old to take up a martial art again. I returned to TaeKwon-do last year at 23, having been out of it for years. Just make sure you're reasonably fit and try to do some stretching exercises before you start, and most importantly, enjoy it! :)

If it's what you want to do then just get in there and give it a go.

If you don't like it, then that could be down to the way the class is aimed.

You should also think about why you want to train??

Fitness? Sparring? Leg Power and feet attacks? Self Defence?

As this could have a bearing on what you really want to do and where you should go to do it ;)

I started back to TKD (did it as a kid) over a year ago, am now 24, so your definately not too old to start it.

Tae Kwon-do is great for fitness, flexibility, control, perseverence, and integrety. There is also alot of respect involved too... at least I see it strong in my club... for one self, the fellow students, and the instructor.

Give it a go, I know you will enjoy it. You really only get out of it what you put in, so sweat it out, and have fun too.

By the way, what area are you in. If in the Cork area, check out the following.

Redking TKD clubs in Whitechurch, Cork, along with Cahir, and Cashel, Tipperary
    www.redkingtkd.com

Or try Great Southern TKD who have a few clubs about Cork.
    www.gotogst.com

    Hope that helps.

Sounds like TKD would be your thing. And by no means is 23/24 too old.
And funnily enough, I did kenpo when I was younger too, and changed to TKD after coming to realise that an art with lots of kicking would suit me better...

    Death Sentence,

Most martial arts, due to their training methods, aren't very effective. If you're looking to learn a martial art that has proven striking effectiveness, and want to kick, then Muay Thai is the best bet IMO. Check out www.bridgestonemuaythai.com (hopefully the link is working)

For other, functional martial arts, I'd recommend Judo, wrestling, boxing, BJJ, or MMA style classes (which I coach). You're more than welcome to try a class with me if you're in the Dublin 24 area or John Kavanagh www.sbgireland.com if you're closer to town.

    Take Care,
    Colm

Man, i went to see Ong-Bak in UGC last night, Muay Thai can be seriously brutal if used with malice.... Cool Martial Art though :)

Oops, thanks for pointing it out to me though.

For those as simple minded as myself Baile Atha Cliath means Dublin!!! LOL

Anyway, OP your best bet is to try out the TKD if that's what you feel you would like to do. I reckon you will most certainly enjoy it. I'm the same age as yourself, doing it over a year now, and loving every minute of it, from training, to sparring, to competition, to the basic techniques, and style.

And if you search back on some of my earlier posts regarding TKD you will see that I speak highly of the philosophy of TKD, and its background (as does Musashi and pma-ire).

    Death Sentence,

    Do what ever you want!

A martial art is that you make it!

"A bad worker blames his tools"

    Enjoy yourself ;)

    I'd echo that sentiment. Enjoy.

Try a few that are nearby and see what suits, and more importantly for myself, has an instructor you can get on with!
I mean,if you only want to learn to hand people beatings go to your local hardware store and buy a good piece of Hickory!Proven striking effectiveness, just watch "Walking Tall" :)
As for MA or MMA or MT or whatever, just do what you enjoy,if Self Defense is a big part of why you want to do a Martial Art then any style will give you the basics and a bit of reading on this and other MA sites will fill you in on the difference between Sports and Combat MA.
For fitness and flexability, they are all of a muchness and for a cool factor there are the Bujinkan styles, and very gymnastic Capoeira!
Any MA has a basic five or ten techniques which are lethal and common to most combat styles, doesn't really matter to your oppennent if it was a Karate knife hand or a TKD knife hand to the throat that he caught! For self defense it's your mental state and willingness to do what may have to be done that counts..............."The fight in the dog,not the dog in the fight"
Have fun whatever you do,you should be knackered but smiling and plotting your sparring partners downfall when you leave class, not feeling stupid and angry.Pick a crew and style you can enjoy and let us know how you get on?

    good answer rom Musashi

    Do what ever you like.

sometimes the people that train in the club can make a difference too. new friends new experiences etc.

be open though as you progress. do not get sucked into my " my style is the best because the sensi says everything else is crap " .

maybe what you start with now, in a year or 3 years you might have moved on to MMA/BJJ, or thai, or KM or even Tai Chi. who knows?

as long as you enjoy what you do and it fits your goals. well thats the main thing!
