Ok first off I checked stickies and I hope this post dont come under the "Dont post where can I buy xxx".

Anyway my pc at the moment is really outdated and runs half-life 1 and its mods at roughly 70fps average which is fine, but only for that.

I want a new budget type pc that will run HL2 and other games/programs decently.

I have a budget of about 500euro for spending on, GFX card, ram, CPU, PSU and motherboard.

Is this out of reach or could I even spend less?

I used to be on top of new hardware but forgot since.

P.S. Id like a gig of ram, for mmorpg games, but I dunno what sort of ram is good nowadays since they all talk about CAL and nanosecond stuff, used to be easy ages ago :)

Also Id like to raid two 60gb(or thereabouts) Hard Drives so Id need a raid mobo. And actually while im on this, is raid still a good cheap alternative to expensive fast drives?

All I can say, either you buy second hand on the for sale forum, go dell, or increase your budget.

    Hi,

If you could up your budget slightly, this lot are available from www.marxcomputers.ie.

    Radeon 9600pro 128MB Euro 135.00
    AMD Athlon 64 3000 Euro 150.00
    DDR-RAM 1GB PC3200/400 Euro 110.00
    Silent ATX 420w PSU - 45
    MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R So754 - Euro 110.00
    Total €550

I have dealt with them and find them to be very prompt with deliveries.

Ok well... Dell would be a good idea , they sell pretty cheap , sweet P4's and nice screens... But as u never mentioned Needing a screen/monitor i presume u dont need 1 and i hope not, Because if u want to build a PC... U wont get **** if u wanna play games...

Anyway, Here's what i picked out on Komplett for ure 500 and i just made it ... Well 518, But it looks quite impressive :) 9800Pro's man play everygame out there, The only bottle neck is the Sempron CPU but as i picked Socket 754 Motherboard/CPU, i can be later upgraded to an AMD Athlon 64 CPU. The only this is , u could save money diretly by buying a singe Hard drive rather then using RAID. But Thats ure choice.

Here's what i think is the best u could buy with 500 (18)

Ehh, but 9800XT's on that site are 208 Euro's. Mabe u meant 9600XT? even if 9600XT, i think a 9800 Would be better to give that extra boost if he goes with a sempron. I think 9600XT's are a little too weak these days and 9800's will be alot better for a gaming man :p

BTW I was flicking through that site.. and i think i would go for komplett over it , Alot of the stuff is OEM stuff like the cases n PSU's and RAM... And nothing seems that cheap.

It was a 9600....ooops....still well able to play recent games.

Komplett is cheaper on most stuff
The only reason I prefer Marx is that u don't need a credit card - They accept all other types of payment. And they are very efficient.
Komplett will only accept Credit card.

QTEC  no no. Just check the forsale forum or if your stuck try the b-grades in Komplett for some cheaper gear. Also try www.jes.de for real cheapness. Gig of RAM for HL2 is preferable and a decent gfx card. What do you have in your PC at the mo that you can salvage.

Just tried putting together some sort of system for 500 which would be decent enough and its hard. Presume you could salvage your HDD,CD/DVD. Case and what PSU do you have? Whats your CPU?

Yes i know Q-Tech, there POS , i have had a Qyec PSu before it was **** , basically it wasnt enough A on 12V rail to power my system fuyll, but for a sempron system it should be fully ok.. I mean the case is ok, its not too bad, i have seen it in real life and its fine... the PSU is a POS but once again its a budget PC so i dont think we can afford tagan's here :>

And yes Nukem, i had picked out a GB of Corsair Value select :) 2 x 512MB sticks. I think the corsair value select of kingston value RAM form komplett are the best choices for RAM here...

Right, thanks for the replys first off, you can scratch a Hard Drive off the list, just found a 7200rpm 120gb 8mb cache UltraATA Western Digital Harddrive in the press, and its still in its wrapping!

Anyway, yeah I do have a monitor although its a crappy old 15", but that will be upgraded in time, I have a mouse, keyboard, cdrom and a case. I hope they aint changed the case standard have they? Its an ATX, I also have a 450w PSU in the machine is that enough?

Other parts that could be savalagble:
    Cpu: (edit fried nm)
    Mobo: Kg7-lite
Soundcard: Creative 5.1 Live, that will do fine also
    GFX: Matrox G400 hehe
256mb stick or DDR ram, dunno how good it is but what it says on the lable is..
    Crucial, 256mb, DDR, 266mhz, CL2.5

Yeah, but Jes has expensive shipping, so it cancels out the savings.

Ya but order everything from Jes and it works out cheaper

    Example

    Leadtek 6600GT - 169
    MSI K8T Neo2-FIR - 92
    1024MB MDT CL2 - 80
    3000+ Winnie - 138

Total = 479 enough for del (well close)

Wooahh...Why didnt u tell us this before ? Well if u dont need case, PSU ( BTW 450 Watts should be fine , i presume the Amp's on12V should be fine ), Cd-ROM.

If u got all the 2d hand components... U will be able to stretch to an Amd Athlon 64 :> Gaming world...

Ok, so u need a CPU, Motherboard, Graphics card, RAM ... Hmmm

Ok here's what i suggest, I know its like over the limit a little but its worth it, Go for quality..But if u rally cant make that much u can buy a cheaper motherboard or AGP motherboard and a 9800Pro for about 450 but doesn't contain Full future compatibilty... With that list i just selected its a 939 socket , guarenteed to be for another few years and PCI express Graphics card, So should keep you going.
