Microsoft Access On Mac OS X

    Hi all,
My friend has a powrbook G4 with MAC OS X on it.
He also has the 'Microsoft Office for MAC' installed on it. But Microsoft Access did not come with the package.
He badly needs Access for a couple of weeks, to open a database he received on CD.

    What are his options?
Is there an open source solution, or is there Access add-on for 'MS Office For Mac'?

Your help/advice would be very much appreciated.

No Access for the Mac, probably never will be.

He might be able to -open- the database in OpenOffice 2.x/X11 pre release builds, but I've only ever seen that functionality working on Windows. And theres no public OO 2.x builds for OSX, anyway.

OOo can't save back to the database however. He pretty much has to use Windows/OS2/Linux/Solaris and use MS Office, a full StarOffice or Ability Office on them.

Microsofts official answer, BTW, is 'Use FileMaker Pro'

Dunno if it can import Access file, though.

You could get a copy of Virtual PC and install MS Access on it. You can then save the access database file to a shared folder on OS X.

Microsoft has promised never to release a version of Access for OS X. However, I believe there is an Excel filter that allows you to import data from an Access database into Excel. - David Stewart

Your friend has office std. what he/she needs is Mac Office Pro, which also come with virtual Pc and access.

Bad new part one, it's access for windows which you run through virtual PC, and unless you are running a high spec machine it will be slow.

Bad news part two, it'll cost about €700 and is a nightmare to find.

BTW: if had a windows terminal server and used a MAC clinet to use MsAccess on that server you would need to get a License for Access for the MAC.

If the person who had the original dB had the developer version of Office then they could have made a standalone executable for the dB - handy for PC's but no use for MAC's since it would not run on them.

I've no idea if you can use ODBC links on MAC's. The person with the original dB could export all the tables in to excel perhaps, but if it also has forms then that ain't gonna keep yer man happy.

    It's a dilly of a pickle allright.

The best option would probably buy a cheap second hand laptop, and put office on it.

    Thanks to all anyway.
