I have the JEB IT teaching qualification and I am interested in starting to teach some evening classes in September. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about this?

    Regards

    Frank

First off, I don't know what kind of qualification that is, but you could try getting in touch with the Institutes of Technology as they run loads of night classes. I've taught at the CIT for the last two years at night in the Dept of Applied Physics. I got the job by getting in touch with the head of department, and as it happened they were looking for someone at the time.

Yeah it really seems like half of the postgrads I know (who did undergrads in maths or physics) are/did night classes out in CIT!

The pay's not too shabby too from what I've heard.

55 Eurons per hour is the going rate in the IT's.

Indeed it is, and I teach 3 hours a week. Very nice indeed.

Very nice. I'd love to do it full time.

Might help if you can list what subjects you can teach?

Approach the vecs, a lot of them will hire jeb teachers for day and evening courses.

Do you have a primary degree as well as the jeb? this really increases the chance of employment in the area of teaching.

Do you have any qualifications in databases?

The reason Im asking is that I have met a lot of people with the JEB qualification and a handful of beginner IT courses under there belt and wonder why they can't get any work.

This is not a personal attack on you, just on the course itself. Its like people who do the ECDL and can't work out why Bill Gates isnt ringing them up offering them a job.

As well as the JEB Teaching IT qualification, I have a Degree in Business Information Technology and 7 years of work experience, including 3+ years at Oracle (one of the major Database company's).

At the minute I'm looking to continue in my current job and get some experience at teaching in evening classes so that I can then perhaps move into a more permanent teaching role in a few years time. My background is in a variety of IT areas, with specific focus on Data and Databases

    :D

I have a similar background to you, except for the JEB (what exactly is that?).TBH, colleges are more concerned with (a) college qualifications (i.e. degree/MSc/PhD) (b) experience - in that order. I am not sure the JEB would be given much weight.

Having taught a few night courses myself, the easiest way to get into it is if you know someone who is already doing it. Failing that, watch the newspapers - during the summer all colleges will advertise for part-time panels.

ALot of the college websites advertise their situations vacant aswell,
U shouldnt have any problems getting some teaching work esp in the vecs with a degree,a jeb and experience:)
