Goldfish acting strange

I have three goldfish and over the last few days they've become for the most part very lethargic. They have a bit of a swim round every now and then but have taken to sitting in a group at the bottom of the tank behind a plant.

    Should I be worried?

You could try giving them a tonic which you can get in a pet shop, it might perk them up a bit. Or maybe change say 25% of the water. Have they any small white spots on them? If so they probably have white spot (also called ich), which is a fungal infection and can be treated with medication from a pet shop.

It may be a good idea to test the water quality. How long have you had the fish? Is the tank aerated? Is it filtered?

If you've had them only a matter of weeks it may well be a build up of ammonia/nitrates in the water - a sign that the filter is not fully mature yet. A partial water change should help in the short term.

99% of the time its a problem with the water.
Although nitrate is not a usual killer it is toxic to the fishes gills & I would suggest you do a nitrate test plus a 30% water change.
Test the rest of the water & there must be something wrong.

GOOD water = Healthy fish, exept is certain circumstances when they are hit by desease. If this was so your fish would be gasping or scratching against something or trying to jump out to remove parasites.

    Thanks for the advice.

We got a new fish a couple of weeks ago and thats when our established two started acting strange ie hiding and sitting, occasionally flying around the tank.
We thought it was the water so we changed it and used bottled water. Didn't do anything so we seperated the new fish to another tank. Did a 50% water change for the other two and treated their water with disease safe.
That was over the weekend. Since then the new fish is quite happy in his bowl and the other two have begun swimming around alot more.
Don't know which helped but we are going to keep them seperate for a while.

Any suggestions how long? We weren't sure if the introduction of the new fish simply stressed the other two or not.
