well, i've got an OLP music man, the colour on it is natural and i'm just bored of the way it looks, i've taken the scratch plate off but it needs more. i was thinking of taking the strings off and covering the input and pickups and just going mad at it with spray paint. yay or nay?

Regular spray paint will just destroy the finish and wood, afaik.

i dont mind messing up the finish, i just want to make it look better, i dont wanna mess up the wood.

I'm afraid I'm of no help here, I've barely touched it I'm so busy these days.

Just go to www.projectguitar.com and have a look around at the tutorials, you'll be sure to find something.

feylya spake and nay was the word.

Regular spray paint won't destroy the wood but it's a hell of a lot more work to spraying a guitar than just pointing a can at the guitar and spraying. Read the link Karl Hungus posted there and also this thread. Long read, lots of pictures but full of wholesome information.

Take the hardware off and burn the body for a while. Then put a spray coat on it a again. Nice.

hmm. i'm thinking of doing the body and the neck black and blue, whats the deal with the neck?

I was looking at that earlier. I believe my response was

Wouldn't be my number 1 choice either.

OLP, why not sand the finish off the body and put a stain on it, leave the grain of the wood showing through?

so, i take all the hardware off, sand it, then paint it with sating?

i'm not very good with all this jazz

I actually quite like that finish.

i like the finish, but i dont think it'd look that good on my bass, that'd look sweet on a jazz, but not mine

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

That's what I meant. I like that finish a lot...

OLP, if you're going for a stain, you'll have to sand whatever finish is on it off, stain and cover. If you're going for a solid colour, do not sand off the existing finish, just rough it up a bit with 800-1200 grit sandpaper.

    gah, confussion

i want it like the blueburst, how do i get that?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Bursts aren't the easiest thing in the world to do.

Go to project guitar, tutorials, building a body and read the tutorial on the easy burst, whatever it's called.

i know, i got rid of it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭OLP

i've got it, i do the whole body in the blue, mask it off and do the outside with black, it'll look very DIY but its supposed to

No, don't mask off the body. It wouldn't be a burst if you did that.

    Read this

It doesn't matter if its not a burst, its supposed to look arsed, all I need to know is, if I should leave the finish on? and what type of paint to use
