    that is the question?

So, any views on googling people.

    Is this akin to stalking?
    Is everybody at it?
Is this mainly a girl thing?

A thought, in a hundred (or so) years time, when we're all dead and buried, our ancestors will be able to pop our names into a computer and maybe find out something they never knew about us ...

depends on how big her breasts are and if i've got sunglasses on.

Most people share their name with hundreds of other people, so it's pretty hard to find them.

are you asking if it's right to google people? Not sure what this is all about.

If you put info about yourself on the web it's there for all to see. I see nothing wrong with googling. It's not like you're hacking into private files.

Nowadays you have no control over whether you are on the net or not. This is because the net is now the mainstream historical media of our society.

I regularly google new people I meet, personally or businesswise... It's very interesting what you discover. As said above - it's not exactly an intrusion into private issues - it's just like checking newspaper archives in the old days.... except a lot easier ;)

Well, you do have the choice of putting your porno snaps up there are not. It's quite easy to find out about a person's job and things like that from other sources.

I've always found talking to them does the trick.

As for googling someone, you know i've never done it to someone else, but was amused by some of the info about me around the place.

If I google my name with quotation marks, I get nothing.

Do you mean just using google, or rather using the Internet to find out about people?

I tend to check people out using the Internet. I do a bit of Internet Dating, so I'll use google, and a number of other sites to do background checks on people, in reference to what they've told me about themselves.

Is that stalking? I don't think so, considering the amount of identities we all have on the net, and the amount of nutters out there.

Wait a second - have I just read this right?

A discussion about the role of therapy in society is out of bounds for Humanities, but a thread on googling dates is on topic?

What sort of nonsense is this?

    Fight da Power!!!!!!!!!!!!

In fairness to amp, my thread was poorly phrased and it pushed the boundaries of what could be considered "fitting for humanities".

Discussing googling dates is harmless drivel, discussing the effect of therapy on children... well it's a little bit more serious. Potentially dangerous if someone who takes what they read on BBs as gospel managed to figure out how to procreate.

The therapy thread would very quickly have developed into a discussion of the role of concepts of normality, the power to change people's behaviour, etc etc etc - which is definitely *on* topic for Humanities. I know that's where I was going to go with it, until I saw the lock.

This "harmless drivel" has gone on far longer with no signs of relevance to *any* topic, on or off humanities.

BOTH threads should be left alone - Boards is a low-traffic site, all posts should be encouraged [usual caveats apply]. I've noticed quite a few times on Boards that moderators just decide based purely on whim - hardly condusive to a useful site, is it?

The therapy thread was too specific. i'm sure if it was more general the uber-mods wouldn't have a prob. Why don't you start one and we'll have a natter about it?

Anyhoo, i've got nothing to worry about, there is officialy nothing on google under my name. A few hits for shabadu though.

What was specific about it? I don't see it. A child - millions of those on the planet.

Meh, I don't care if people google my real name. If they actually get the spelling right (small miracle), all they'll find out is that I'm a bit of a geek, which is usually pretty obvious anyway.

I can go one step beyond google. I've access to lexis-nexis which gives me access to 11,000 newspaper's archives.. Company documents... International Law reports... weird databases.. journals on pretty much anything.. even found some transcripts of the Montel williams show on there :D

You can spend all day on it. I'm sure once, i did.

Once found my dad mentioned in the Irish mirror on it, that was a shocker! But it was just some comment he made about some government something or other.

My friends dad was involved in sending a field of Irish turf to New York. Bizarre stuff.

I searched for the name of a road near me and found a report where the parents of a guy i know were up in court, it was mentioned in the Indo as a funny aside. Strangely it was in the paper the day before i found it on there.

    Google= ok
    Lexis = The Shizzle

I used to work late into the night, and when I got bored, I'd google people. Me and the guy who worked the shift with me (he was in New Jersey) found one of our writers (with an unusual name) has an unusual sideline... she writes internet porn.

We spent about two hours howling over it, I was daring him a night's wages to copy some of it into Word, redline it and send her feedback...
